According to the reports, Intel has been found working on to build a new ATOM SoC, codenamed as “Lightning Mountain”. Phoronix was the first one to spot the details of the upcoming Intel’s chip in Linux Kernel patch notes, which published recently, then comes the Tom’s Hardware.
The patch notes say that the new Soc will be a “network processor” but the sources also suggests that it will be used for other applications as well.
The Linux Kernel code indicates that the Intel’s upcoming chipset will not only be used a network processor but also be used for many other purposes. It is expected that Linux 5.4 will support Lightning Mountain.
Talking about the processor specification details, the Lightning Mountain processor is based on 14nm Airmont architecture. However, it is still a mystery that why Intel is using the old architecture instead of the newer ones including Goldmont Plus (14nm) and Tremont (10nm).
Recently, Intel has launched a series of new chipsets and made many announcements regarding the new and upcoming releases. The company recently introduced it’s first AI chip called “Springhill” at HotChips 2019. The company has also launched 8 new mobile processors based the 14nm Comet Lake architecture.
