The smartphone has been in the market for some months now. It features high-end specs and features everyone would dream of in a phone. But there’s one common stumbling block with phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, it’s very expensive. The phone only suits the rich class of people who could afford to pay over $1,000 for a device.

It’s in scenarios like this, that brands such OnePlus have excelled and will continue to. OnePlus are known for giving users most of those high-end specs of the iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus for a more considerable amount. The new device from OnePlus called OnePlus 6 is a living example to that. The smartphone’s features make it a worthy comparable device with the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. How is the OnePlus a worthy competitor against the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is what we will be looking at here.

When it comes to design of most smartphones these days, it’s hard to tell a difference. The OnePlus 6 and Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus front and back are made up of Corning Gorilla Glass 5, with the frame made up of aluminum. Both phones feature a dual rear camera, which is placed at the center. The dual-LED flash of the OnePlus 6 is below its dual rear camera. While the LED flash of the Galaxy S9 Plus is at the right hand side of its dual rear camera. Their fingerprint sensor is mounted at the usual back position. The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus has an IP68 certified rating, which means it’s water/dust resistance. The OnePlus 6 is also water/dust resistance according to OnePlus, but no IP rating to back up their claim.

The OnePlus 6 is shorter and slimmer compared to the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. Weighing 189 grams with 158.1 x 73.8 x 8.5 mm dimensions is the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. While weighing 177 grams with 155.7 x 75.4 x 7.8 mm in dimensions is the OnePlus 6. The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus has many body color options compared to the OnePlus 6. Available in Midnight Black, Coral Blue, Titanium Gray, Lilac Purple, Burgundy Red and Sunrise Gold body colors is the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. While available in Midnight Black, Mirror Black and Silk White body colors is the OnePlus 6.

Samsung is few of the smartphone companies that haven’t adopted the trending notch display. The OnePlus 6 comes with a notch display and 19:9 aspect ratio. The display of OnePlus 9 is slightly bigger to the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus 18.5:9 aspect ratio display. They both feature AMOLED touchscreen, with the OnePlus 6 having an Optic AMOLED screen while the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus has a Super AMOLED screen.

The OnePlus 6 sports a 6.28-inch screen size, 1080 x 2280 pixels resolution with 402 PPI density. While the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus sports a 6.2-inch screen size, 1440 x 2960 pixels resolution with 529 PPI density. Like I said in the design category, their screen is protected by Corning gorilla glass 5.

We all know the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus has one of the best camera quality on the smartphone. But it looks like the OnePlus 6 can challenge it. The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus sports a primary 12MP f/1.5-2.4 aperture sensor combined with secondary 12MP f/2.4 aperture sensor. The aperture on the primary sensor automatically switches based on light conditions. The Galaxy S9 Plus is equipped with an 8MP f/1.7 front camera.

The OnePlus 6 comes with a bigger megapixel at the front. The phone is equipped with a 16MP f/2.0 shooter. At the rear of the OnePlus 6, you find a primary 16MP f/1.7 aperture shooter with a secondary 20MP f/1.7 aperture shooter. Both the OnePlus 6 and Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus can shoot a 4K resolution video at 60fps. It will be hard for OnePlus 6 to defeat the Galaxy S9 Plus here. But that doesn’t mean the camera specs of the OnePlus 6 is bad.

This is where the OnePlus 6 makes other high-end phones look silly. The hardware of the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is exactly the same on the OnePlus 6, with the OnePlus 6 available for lesser price. They’re both powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, carrying 4-cores clocked at 2.8GHz and 4-cores clocked at 1.7GHz. The Adreno 630 graphics processing unit takes care of graphics for both devices.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus runs on Samsung experience skin on top of Android 8.0 Oreo. While running on the OnePlus 6 is Android 8.1 Oreo with Oxygen OS 5.1.1 on top. The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is only available in 6GB memory with either 64GB, 128GB or 256GB inbuilt storage. While the OnePlus 6 is available in 6GB memory, which has a 64GB inbuilt storage and 8GB memory with 128GB or 256GB inbuilt storage. The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus supports microSD while the OnePlus 6 doesn’t.

Powering the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is a non-removable Li-lon 3500 battery. While powering the OnePlus 6 is a non-removable Li-lon 3300 battery. The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus supports USB 3.1 Type-C Charger while the OnePlus 6 supports USB 2.0 Type-C Charger. They both feature fast battery charging, while just the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus features Qi wireless charging.

OnePlus 6 VS Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus – The Price

The OnePlus 6 is obviously cheaper than the Galaxy S9 Plus. The OnePlus 6 is sold for about $613 (N214,550) while the Galaxy S9 Plus goes for about $1,165 (N407,750). The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is near twice the price of OnePlus 6 and still, they both feature the same hardware!!! The only category the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus will likely triumph easily over the OnePlus 6 is the camera. Aside from that, OnePlus 6 is a pure value smartphone.
