OnePlus 7 Pro won’t have an IP rating but it’s water resistant

Fans have always wanted a device with an IP-rating. OnePlus, however, has always ignored that feature on all of its devices. OnePlus released a new teaser video and in it, it was revealed that the OnePlus 7 Pro will not have an IP rating just like the other phones but it will be water resistant.

In the video which is 30 seconds long, OnePlus says “Water resistant ratings for phones cost you money”. This money which is used to get an IP rating for the phone will then be added to the price of the phone and as a result, the phone will cost more. So instead of getting an IP rating, OnePlus says it got something which is far less expensive, a bucket.

In the video posted by OnePlus, the OnePlus 7 Pro is dropped into a water-filled bucket to prove the phone’s water resistance. However, a part of the video says that warranty doesn’t cover water damage. It’s actually normal as even phones that have an actual IP rating don’t have warranties that cover water damage.

After the video, Carl Pei shared a post on the OnePlus Forum in which he explains and addresses different questions asked by users. According to OnePlus, their aim is to do the right things based on what its users need and not the industry. Even though they agree that an IP rating will prove the easiest way to prove to users about the water resistance of the phone, they don’t believe that the certification “helps [us] communicate our focus on your real experience”, so they chose to use a bucket and a video instead.

According to OnePlus, “this is not a bucket challenge” and the company does not people dropping their phones into a bucket of water. If your phone gets damaged in the course, repairs won’t be free even if it still under warranty. At the end of the video, Carl Pei said that this doesn’t mean future devices from OnePlus won’t have IP ratings.

So would you still go for the OnePlus 7 Pro even though it doesn’t have an IP rating? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
