When the iPhone X was released in the last quarter of 2017 with a notch display, we knew it was only a matter of time before other smartphone companies adopt it. OEM companies such as Huawei, Oppo, Vivo and so on, have manufactured smartphones featuring the top notch display feature. For this article, we would be looking at two mid-range smartphones that feature the top-notch; the Oppo F7 and Vivo V9.

You would think we are comparing both devices because of their top-notch feature, but that’s not the case. Aside from their top-notch display, the two are so similar in a lot of ways. They’re both selfie-focused smartphones with a quality front camera. They even have similar weights and dimensions. Let’s just say we are curious to find out what makes them different from each other and which one is actually better.

Oppo F7 VS Vivo V9 – The Design

The Oppo F7 features rounded edges while the edges on the Vivo V9 is curved. They both come in a front glass with an aluminum unibody, which has polymer material giving them a glass-look. The Oppo F7 has a single rear camera system. While the Vivo V9 has a dual rear camera setup. Their rear camera is at the top left of the device. The fingerprint sensor of both the Oppo F7 and Vivo V9 are rear mounted.

The Vivo V9 comes slightly lighter weighing just 150 grams with 7.9 mm thickness. While the Oppo F7 weighs 158 grams with 7.8 mm thickness. The Oppo F7 comes in Solar Red, Diamond Black, and Moonlight Silver body colors. The Moonlight Silver body color is exclusive to the 64GB internal storage variants. While Black and Gold body colors are available for the Vivo V9.

They both feature the usual IPS LCD touchscreen. With the Oppo F7 having a 6.23-inch FHD+ display and 19:9 aspect ratio. While the Vivo V9 has a 6.3-inch FHD+ display with 19:9 aspect ratio. Their screen displays a 1080 x 2280 pixels resolution. While the Vivo V9 has a 400 PPI density. The Vivo V9 has a 405 PPI density. The Oppo F7 comes with Corning gorilla glass 5 while the Vivo V9 comes with a regular glass.

The camera is the best highlights of the Oppo F7 and the Vivo V9. The Vivo V9’s dual rear camera has a 16MP primary sensor and 5MP f/2.0 secondary sensor. The rear camera setup is capable of shooting 4K resolution videos something the Oppo F7 is incapable of doing. It also features dual-LED flash and phase detection autofocus. The front camera of the Vivo V9 sports a 24MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture.

The Oppo F7 single rear camera has a 16MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture. The single rear camera doesn’t stop it from taking quality pictures thanks to its phase detection autofocus, dual-LED flash, and AI features. The Oppo F7 is equipped with a 25MP sensor and f/2.0 aperture at the front camera.

Oppo F7 VS Vivo V9 – Hardware and Software

The Oppo F7 is powered by Mediatek Helio P60 chipset with 4-cores clocking at 2.0GHz Cortez-A73 and 4-cores clocking at 2.0GHz Cortez-A53. For the graphics, the phone comes with Mali-G72 MP3 graphics processing unit. While powering the Vivo V9 is Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 chipset carrying 8-cores clocked at 2.2GHz Cortez-A53. The graphics of the Vivo V9 is powered by Adreno 506 graphics processing unit.

Both smartphones have their own skin software embedded with Android 8.1 Oreo. The Vivo V9 runs on Funtouch OS 4.0 skin. While the Oppo F7 runs on ColorOS 5.0 skin. They both come in a standard 4GB memory with 64GB internal storage. While the Oppo F7 has a bigger variant of 6GB memory with 128GB internal storage.

Oppo F7 VS Vivo V9 – The Battery

This is where both smartphones let me down. The Oppo F7 packs a non-removable Li-Ion 3400 mAh battery that doesn’t support fast battery charging. While the Vivo V9 packs a non-removable Li-Ion 3260 mAh battery and also doesn’t support fast battery charging. Most 2018 mid-range smartphones do support fast battery charging, at least the smallest version.

Oppo F7 VS Vivo V9 – The Price

The Oppo F7 cost around $323 (N113,050), which is cheaper considering the Vivo V9 cost about $356 (N124,600). Vivo V9’s extra cash would have been justified if it features fast better charging. Both smartphones are virtually the same to me and I would instead go with a cheaper Oppo F7.
