Xiaomi Mi 8 was unveiled during the Chinese OEM’s 8th year anniversary today in China after so many rumours. The Mi 8 will be Xiaomi’s first flagship smartphone that will be available in other 8 other countries immediately after launch. It’s also the first Xiaomi smartphone with the trending notched screen, which can also be hidden.
Just like other flagships, the Mi 8 houses Qualcomm’s best chip, the Snapdragon 845. The notch houses an infrared lens that offers 3D Face ID, letting you unlock your device in dark environments. There’s a 6GB and 256GB storage variant, dual rear camera and lots more.
Design
The Xiaomi Mi 8 sports an aluminium alloy overall unibody that’s quite exquisite and stunning to look at. The aluminium is of the 7000 series, with a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top, this lets the device reflect light in the most subtle. The fingerprint scanner is an alternative to those that don’t like the trending Face ID.
We can’t help but notice the same camera format on the Mi Mix 2S here as well, with the dual-LED flash coming in-between. The device measures 7.6 mm in thickness and weighs just 175g overall. The SIM tray by the left can accept dual nano SIMs with no microSD slot. You can get it in Black, Blue, White and Gold colors.
Display
As stated above, this is the first Xiaomi smartphone with the trending notched screen. The notch isn’t just for decoration, it houses the selfie camera, proximity sensor, earpiece, infrared lens and lighting. While the bottom bezel came out to play as well.
Focusing on the screen, the 6.21-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen is literally out of this world. Boasting of 1080 x 2248 pixels in resolution, 402 pixel per inch density and stretches up to 83.8% screen-to-body ratio. The screen has HDR10 complaint, DCI-P3 and a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top.
Hardware and Software
Under the hood, the powerful Snapdragon 845 chip from Qualcomm takes charge with an Octa-Core processor and 64-bit CPU architecture. The 8-Cores of processor here runs at a blazing speed of 2.8GHz with 10nm FinFET process technology. The Adreno 630 graphics processor handles graphics here.
In terms of RAM, there’s just 6GB available and ready to handle all your heavy multitasking, with a memory speed of 1.8GHz. While for storage, there are three versions, one with 128GB and another with 256GB, there’s a cheaper variant with 64GB as well. There’s no microSD slot to upgrade further, it runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with the new MIUI 10.
Camera
The cameras on the Mi 8 are a force to reckon with, it overtook expensive flagships on the world’s number 1 camera rating site, DXOMark. It performed just like the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus and outperformed industry heavyweights like the iPhone X, Pixel 2 and even the Mi Mix 2S. The AI powered dual 12MP + 12MP rear shooter on the Xiaomi Mi 8 has f/1.8 and f/2.4 aperture respectively.
The first 12MP on top has 1/2.55″ sensor size, 1.4µm pixel size, 4-axis OIS and dual-pixel PDAF. While the 12MP shooter below the dual-LED flash has 1/3.4″ sensor size and 1.0µm pixel size. Both cameras offer 2x optical zoom, dual pixel phase detection autofocus, geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR and panorama. Record videos of 2160p@60fps and 1080p@30/240fps, while the 20MP selfie shooter on the notch has f/2.0 aperture, 1.8µm pixel size and AI beautify technology.
Battery
Powering the Xiaomi Mi 8 is a 3400mAh non-removable Li-Po battery with fast charging technology. With the fast charging feature, charging the battery from 0% to 100% shouldn’t take up to 1.8 hours.
