Similar to what Schenker Technologies offer with their XMG line-up Eurocom produces gaming laptops that come in Clevo casings. The Eurocom Sky MX5 R3 is an improvement over its predecessor, the MX5 R2. This laptop comes in a few variants that alter in display or CPU.

Interestingly, this refresh edition of the MX5 ships with a top-of-the-class Nvidia GTX 1070 graphics card. With the stable/durable build and futuristic design, the Eurocom Sky MX5 R3 is alluring on the outside and wonderful inside.

Design

Firstly, let’s put it simply that the Eurocom Sky MX5 R3 looks every bit like a gaming laptop. The air vents distribution, black color scheme, and overall chassis design hint at a futuristic laptop. The chassis is made mainly of plastic with some metal decorations.

The lid and base are held together by a pair of small but sturdy hinges. The hinges allow for the lid to be turned up to a maximum of about 140 degrees.

The MX5 R3 has a footprint of 385 x 271 mm (width x depth) and is 28.8mm high. As a result, this system is out of the class of slim gaming laptops. The weight is 2.88 kg which while being heavy is not so bad for a gaming notebook.

Display

The MX5 R3 comes with a 15.6-inch display at Full HD resolution. The panel is not glossy and is fairly visible while using outdoors.

Above the screen is a Full HD webcam with 2MP resolution and beneath it is the Eurocom logo.

As hinted in the introduction, the Eurocom Sky MX5 R3 comes in several display options – a matte Full HD display at 60Hz, a matte Full HD panel at 120Hz, a matte Ultra HD panel at 60Hz, a semi-glossy Ultra HD display at 60Hz, and a glossy Ultra HD 60Hz panel. All display panels are based on IPS technology.

Whichever display type you decide to choose, they all share the advantages of quick response times and more-than-average brightness. A major drawback, however, is the low contrast ratios.

Keyboard and Touchpad

A full-size keyboard adorns the top of the lower half of the MX5 R3. The keys have a good tactile feedback with good key travel. The keyboard comes with three-zonal RGB backlighting but not per-key backlighting – which would have been great. The palm rest is spacious enough and has doesn’t feel so slippery.

The touchpad has an area of ~4.3 x 2.6 inch which is sufficient enough for multi-finger controls. The surface is smooth and responsive with high cursor precision. At the bottom of the touchpad are two mouse buttons separated by a fingerprint scanner.

Performance

In terms of performance, the Eurocom Sky MX R3 is equipped with a seventh-generation Intel Core i7 and a GTX 1070 GPU. A whopping 64GB of DDR4 RAM is also part of the package while the internal storage is a 500GB SSD (expandable to 12TB).

With the high-end CPU and GPU, this laptop is VR-ready and can easily handle even the most graphically intense games. An icing on the cake is the fact that the GPU doesn’t throttle while gaming giving a smooth gaming experience.

For software, Microsoft’s Windows 10 OS (Pro edition) is pre-installed on the SSD.

Battery Life

A 60Whr battery keeps the MX5 running. At maximum settings and usage, the system should deliver up to about 2 hours of usage before shutting down. That being said, users will need to be close to a power source most of the time.

Ports and Connectivity

Port distribution on the Sky MX5 R3 is generous with three USB 3.0 ports, two USB type-C ports (no Thunderbolt 3 support), HDMI out, two mini DisplayPorts and Kensington Lock. Other included ports are an SD card reader, microphone and headphone jacks, Gigabit Ethernet port, and a mini SIM card slot.

Price and Availability

The Eurocom Sky MX5 R3 starts at around $1500 for the lowest model with a 1080p matte panel. The gaming notebook can be found on leading e-retailers and some physical stores worldwide.
