Huawei Nova 2i Review – An Excellent mid-range Phone at a good price

Mid-range smartphones are always the fiercest battlefield in the world where mobile operators tend to integrate the high-end features of the luxury line, but sell at a lower price to reach users.

Out of this strategy, Huawei has also brought the Nova 2i, a mobile phone that has achieved excellent sales in neighbouring markets in Vietnam and some other part of the world. It inherits the P10 technology, eliminating the need for more advanced and cost-effective configurations.

Huawei Nova 2i Screen overflow, metal body

Capturing the trend of 2017 smartphones, Huawei equips the Nova 2i metal body. The overall look of the rearview camera is quite similar to the iPhone, especially when viewed in corners and edges. However, the front of the Huawei Nova 2i is different; thanks to the 5.9-inch screen that occupied the entire front.

Screen ratio – body up to 83%, creating a comfortable display space. Thanks to the screen near the border, Nova 2i has the overall size just as the 5.5-inch smartphone on the market.

Although it is a mid-range device, the sweet finish on the Nova 2i can be compared to the high-end models of 2015 and 2016. It feels sturdy, sturdy. Bounce and close buttons. The fingerprint sensor is located near the camera assembly, but the camera border bulges so users will not accidentally touch the lens when unlocking with a fingerprint.

However, the addition of a convex camera makes this the first contact with the underlying surface, which can easily lead to scratches, affecting image quality. Users can overcome by wearing a back cover for the phone.

On the new model Huawei Nova come equipped with Full HD screen resolution, IPS LCD panel. The experience shows that this screen works pretty well, even outdoors. Neutral colours and balance, not self-sparking.

Huawei Nova 2i Camera is good in price range, but need software improvement

The ability to take pictures can be a pride of Nova 2i because this model owns up to 4 cameras. The front-facing camera has a resolution of 13 MP and 2 MP. It also supports beauty and sticker capture, fun effects when shooting photos or recording videos.

At the back, Huawei equips the Nova 2i dual-camera 16 MP and 2 MP, capable of capturing images, and portrait mode combined with the beauty algorithm. Similar to iOS, Nova 2i also features live photos, which help users capture better moments when the camera automatically captures a lot of frames, supporting the selection of the best photos.

The fast camera experience shows that the selfie camera of Nova 2i is really fun. The camera makes a good “make-up” of the portrait, which supports the “soft” flash (which adds light to the face) to support selfie in dim lighting.

In the following camera, Nova 2i also works quite well in normal shooting mode. Colors tend to be brilliant, especially blue, yellow and red colours. Photos taken after shooting are also processed to look a little bit more beautiful.

In “Wide Aperture” mode, users are offered a range of aperture faders from f/0.95 to f/16, from the level of “clear mist” to the panoramic image. However, when selecting apertures that are too large (f/0.95-f.1.8), the font removal effect may be inaccurate, leaving some details at the transfer point between the subject and the background.

In portrait mode, Nova 2i incorporates both beauty and texture removal capabilities, aiming for “virtual” images as it adds bokeh-like spots in photography. In some cases, the photos gave quite impressive results – bright and beautiful portraits, sparkling backgrounds.

Comparing Nova 2i with rivals, the camera of this smartphone is “more comfortable” and very encouraging. However, Huawei should update the algorithm for this product to produce good portraits and remove the fonts more accurately.

Huawei Nova 2i Performance and software

Nova 2i is equipped with HiSilicon Kirin 659 8-core chipset, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of memory. The battery has a capacity of 3,340 mAh. While not using the Snapdragon chip, “homegrown” Kirrin chip over the past few years has received excellent feedback from users.

HiSilicon Kirin 659 is an ARM-based system chip for smartphones and midrange tablets. Announced in mid-2017, the HiSilicon Kirin 650 has eight cores (64 bit) ARM Cortex-A53. The four cores have speeds of up to 1.7 GHz (core for light duty, battery-saving) and four cores for 2.36 GHz (dedicated for heavy-duty operations). In some performance reviews, the chip is slightly faster than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625.

Ignoring the reference parameters, the experience on the new Nova 2i is something to talk about. Huawei brings the EMUI 5.1 user interface to Android 7.0, and the software is quite good. AppDrawer eliminates the need for a smooth, simple touch. Although the icon system is quite classic, users can completely replace the popular launcher from the Android app store.

On the ability to play games or play video, Nova 2i is quite well-behaved. Action games requiring high graphics such as Asphalt 8, Crossfire Legend can play smoothly on it with less lag.

With a 3,340mAh battery, the Nova 2i is capable of running almost daily with a combination of surfing, social networking, and lightweight gaming.

Overall, the Nova 2i is a pretty smartphone in the midrange segment. It is suitable for leisure and selfie photography needs.
