Google made the news yesterday when it cut business ties with Huawei as part of a US government order.
The news means that the Chinese manufacturer loses access to Android system updates, as well as Google services in future devices. Huawei has answered the question but also leaves several questions unanswered at this time.
“Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products, covering those that have been sold and are still available in stores globally,” the company said in a declaration.
“We will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem in order to provide the best experience for all users globally,” he added. Will this software ecosystem include Huawei’s Plan B operating system on which it has worked over the years? This is one of many unanswered questions in the wake of the statement.
What happens now?
Huawei’s answer clearly seeks to ensure current Huawei device owners that their phones will be fine for now. The feeling was also echoed by a previous Google tweet, confirming that Google Play and Play Protect services will continue to work on existing devices.
But Huawei’s statement also raises the question of how the company will distribute security patches without Google’s help. Manufacturers can in fact get access to some security solutions through the Android Open Source project (AOSP). However, this may lead to further complications for Huawei, due to the certification process supported by Google for updates.
The manufacturer’s declaration does not even solve the problem of updates to Android versions. Will the company leave existing devices on the same version of Android until the problem is resolved, or could it upgrade to its operating system and lose access to Google?
Huawei has also confirmed that its Honor 20 launch event, scheduled for May 21 in London, will proceed as planned. But the statement does not clarify how the next phones will be affected by the ban.
