LG Q7 VS LG Q6 – why the LG Q6 is already outdated

LG Q7 VS LG Q6 – why the LG Q6 is already outdated. After months of rumors and leaks, LG has officially released the LG Q7. The new smartphone from LG is a successor to their 2017’s LG Q7. The LG Q7 follows the footsteps of the LG Q6 by offering three variants called LG Q7, LG Q7 Plus, and LG Q7 Alpha. In last year’s LG Q6, LG Q6 Plus and LG Q6 Alpha, the only difference is their in-built storage. While for this year’s LG Q7 variants, the in-built storage and camera specs differentiates them.

According to many tech pundits, the LG Q7 is a stripped version of the company’s flagship; LG G7 ThinQ. The LG Q7 will be facing a stiff competition in the affordable segment with so many phones offering flagship performance for reasonable prices such OnePlus 6, Huawei Honor 10, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S and Xiaomi Mi 8. But first, let’s see if the new LG Q7 is better off than the LG Q6.

LG Q7 VS LG Q6 – The Design

The LG Q7 and LG Q6 looks somewhat similar in design. The two smartphones feature a front glass, aluminum frame and plastic back. The plastic back is a big let down for me especially for the LG Q7 considering the price-tag. They’re both water/dust resistant with an IP68 certified rating and a MIL-STD 810G certification military-grade durability. Not sure you’ll see many mid-range smartphones with such certifications, so big thumbs up to LG in that regard. The new LG Q7 weighs 145 grams with 8.4mm in thickness while the LG Q6 weighs 149 grams and measures 8.1mm thick.

The position of the rear camera is different on both smartphones. The rear camera of the LG Q7 is aligned at the top center. While that of the LG Q6 is aligned at the top left corner. There’s no fingerprint sensor for the LG Q6. The smartphone was released in August 2017 at a time when the fingerprint sensor was a trend. While the LG Q7 features a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The LG Q6 is available in Astro Black, Ice Platinum, Mystic White and Terra Gold body colors. While the LG Q7 comes in Lavender Violet, Aurora Black, and Moroccan Blue body colors.

LG Q7 VS LG Q6 – The Display

The LG Q7 comes with no reasonable upgrade in the display department. Both the LG Q6 and LG Q7 features a 5.5 inch IPS LCD touchscreen, an 18:9 aspect ratio, 1080 x 2160 pixels resolution and 442 pixels per inch density. The LG Q7 sports a 77.3% screen-to-body ratio while the LG Q6 sports a 78% screen-to-body ratio.

LG Q7 VS LG Q6 – The Camera

This is where it gets tricky for the LG Q7. The rear camera of LG Q6 features a 13MP sensor, f/2.2 aperture, 1.12µm pixels size and LED flash. The camera specs are also featured on the LG Q7 and LG Q7 Alpha. While the LG Q7 Plus features a 16MP sensor instead. For selfies, the LG Q6 is equipped with a 5MP shooter and f/2.2 aperture. On the LG Q7 variants, you get a 5MP shooter, f/1.9 aperture, and 1.12µm pixels size for the LG Q7 Alpha. While the LG Q7 and Q7 Plus feature an 8MP shooter, f/1.9 aperture, and 1.12µm pixels size.

LG Q7 VS LG Q6 – Hardware and Software

Under the hood of the LG Q6 is an 8-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz, an Adreno 505 graphics processing unit and Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 chipset. While powering the LG Q7 is MediaTek MT6750S chipset, an 8-core processor, and Mali-T860MP2 graphics processing unit. Overall, the MediaTek MT6750S chip and Snapdragon 435 chip are almost equal in terms of benchmarks and performing tasks. So I don’t really think there’s a much upgrade here.

The LG Q6 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat while the LG Q7 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo. The LG Q6 Alpha comes with a 2GB memory and 16GB internal storage. The 3GB memory and 32GB internal storage is for the LG Q6. And the 4GB memory and 64GB internal storage for the Q6 Plus. There’s no 2GB memory with 16GB storage on the LG Q7 variants. Both the LG Q7 and Q7 Alpha comes with a 3GB memory and 32GB storage. While the LG Q7 Plus comes with a 4GB memory and 64GB storage.

LG Q7 VS LG Q6 – The Battery

Both smartphones pack a non-removable Li-Po 3000 mAh battery. The LG Q7 features fast battery charging (Pump Express+) while the LG Q6 doesn’t.

LG Q7 VS LG Q6 – The Price

The LG Q6 is sold for about $244 (N85,400) while the LG Q7 goes for about $534 (N186,900). The LG Q6 is already outdated when you consider trending features like fast battery charging and fingerprint sensor. The new LG Q7 will be my obvious choice in this one.
