Look What’s Coming to CES 2024 – TiVo Combines with Google

Yes, TiVo FCC is coming in time for CES in 2024 as can be confirmed from a filing for remote control. This suggests that the company is getting nods to show Android TV-based set-top box at CES in Las Vegas come January 2019.

This device will not be sold to the public market, from the hints we are getting, though things may change. Most importantly, this device is meant to be sold to TV operators who are looking for ways to combine TiVo’s DVR capacity with Google’s TV platform.

TiVo itself has not come out to give any comprehensive comment about the development.

Universal Electronics, the company that made the filing detailed a TiVo Creek Android Voice Remote which includes a picture that depicted a remote that vaguely resembles the TiVo typical peanut shape, though it was done with a significantly smaller form factor.

As can be seen, the remote is TiVo-branded though it comes without the company’s signature thumps-up and down buttons. There is also a Netflix button and a button for Google’s Android Assistant. Taking another look, you will see that it does not have a separate microphone button, and that suggests that the device uses the Assistant for all voice search needs.

An announcement came from TiVo earlier that there will be an expansion to Android TV at CES 2018. This also comes with a goal of signing up contractors the company’s next generation platform.

Sometime after that, TiVo signed some deals with operators, who included TDS Telecom to use Android TV-based TiVo devices. However, it appears that the company will not be using this deal Android TV for retail products in the market.

This remote disclosed at the start of the week, Monday to be precise, does not feature any clearly seen operator branding. Further, a VOD button suggests that it was designed operator use in mind. The company is well known for a long time that it has special relationship. Nevertheless, on the other side of things, the firm continues to build and sell DVRs for end users, including some other devices of different use.
