When smartphone manufacturers design and produce any device, they usually have a focus in mind, a problem they intend to solve with the product. We have seen smartphones with Quad-cameras that intend to make poor photography a thing of the past, likewise, there are some selfie focused devices with amazing front/selfie cameras. OEMs like Gionee and Infinix have also made power their main focus on some of their devices by embedding batteries with huge capacities.
Razer, which is a San Francisco based computer hardware company founded in 1998 have released a smartphone, the Razer Phone with a focus on smartphone gaming. Let’s have a look at some of the device components and see what makes the Razer Phone fit for gaming.
DESIGN
In all honesty, the Razer Phone doesn’t quite entice me as regards its design and appearance. If I were blind to the other features that this device offers and I was left to choose one device out of 5 in a display room or showroom, I’d most definitely pass on the Razer.
The device is really big… and heavy. It comes with a dimension of 158.5 x 77.7 x 8 mm and together with the built-in battery, is only 3 grams away from clocking 200 grams (weighs 197 grams). The Razer Phone is super thick and comes with sharp edges.
The device’s rare is also pretty much mundane as it features only the company’s three Snake-headed emblem, the dual camera and the LED flash light.
On the right side, Razer neatly embedded the lock button which is also the device’s fingerprint sensor while the volume adjustment keys sits midway on the left hand side (right side when viewed from the back).
Being a gaming device, Razer wants you immerse yourself not just in the visuals of your game, but also in the audio. This is why there are two front-facing stereo speakers with dual amplifiers on the Razer Phone; one on the top of the display, and the other at the bottom.
The Razer Phone follows in the steps of devices like the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL as it lacks the 3.5 mm earphone jack. Instead, it comes with an adapter which can be inserted in the USB Type-C port before using an earphone or headset.
DISPLAY
The Razer Phone’s screen is big also big enough, more like the perfect size, for gaming. The screen an a back-lit LCD UltraMotion Quad-High Definition (QHD) display, is sized at 5.72 inches and comes with a pretty high resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. As regards protection, there is a third version of Corning’s Gorilla Glass guarding the gaming phone against dust and scratches.
PROCESSOR, OS AND STORAGE
One of the highlight of this smartphone is the huge accompanying 8 GB of RAM. Think about how many heavy games and applications you can run smoothly on the Razer Phone without lag. The device uses Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 System-on-Chip and Adreno 540 Graphics Processing Unit.
Per storage, the Razer Phone offers a stunning 64 GB of built-in storage capacity which you can expand to up to 2 Terabytes using the SD card slot. On the Razer Phone, you get to enjoy a pure Android experience as it comes with a stock Android v7.1.1 Nougat OS which Razer says will be upgradable to the Android Oreo OS sometime in January 2018.
On the Razer Phone, there is an inherent Game Booster app (serves as a secondary game settings) which helps fine-tune your gaming experience to the smoothest level.
CAMERA AND BATTERY
The Razer Phone comes with two 12 MP + 12 MP camera sensor and in the company of a LED flash light on the rear. On the front, there’s a single 8 MP selfie camera on selfie duties
Powering the device is a collosal 4,000 mAh battery. This is particularly laudable because what else perfectly befits a gaming smartphone than a long-lasting battery for more game time? Nothing I’d say.
PRICING AND AVAILABILITY
The Razer Phone is priced at $700 and will begin shipping out officially for sale on the 17th of November, 2017.
