Their latest flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S9, and S9 Plus are among the best-selling smartphones of 2018. But when it comes to the budget and mid-range segment, they’re yet to conquer it. This could the reason why they keep churning out budget smartphones this year.

Their latest phone for the budget market is the Samsung Galaxy J3 (2018). The cheap smartphone is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy J3 (2017). In this article, we’ll be comparing the 2018’s Samsung Galaxy J3 with the 2017’s Samsung Galaxy J3. Let’s see if the 2018 model is any better than its predecessor.

The design of the (2018) Galaxy J3 looks somewhat similar with the 2017 Galaxy J3. The only difference is the top and bottom antenna lines on the 2017’s edition has been ditched for the Galaxy J3 (2018). Both J3 smartphones features a front glass with an aluminum unibody. There’s no biometric security (face unlock or fingerprint sensor) for both smartphones. You’ll have to make use of the regular PIN or Pattern security feature. A single rear camera with LED flash is what’s available on both phones. The rear camera and LED flash are both aligned at the top center.

The top and bottom bezels is quite big that the home button sits conveniently on the bottom bezels. The Galaxy J3 (2017) weighs 142 grams and measures 8.2 mm thick. Whereas, the Galaxy J3 (2018) weighs 152 grams with 8.9 mm in thickness. In terms of body colors option, the Galaxy J3 (2017) comes in White, Blue, Black and Gold colors. While the Galaxy J3 (2018) comes in Blue, Gold and Black colors.

Samsung is not being creative here as the display specs are the same on both phones. Their display features a 5.0-inch screen size with 16:9 aspect ratio. The resolution is a 720 x 1280 pixels and 294 pixels per inch density. Samsung couldn’t even give an 18:9 aspect ratio display.

The Galaxy J3 (2017) has a 13MP rear camera, which features a f/1.9 aperture and LED flash. The front-facing camera is equipped with a 5MP selfie shooter, f/2.2 aperture and LED flash. Whereas, the Galaxy J3 (2018) features an 8MP rear camera with f/1.9 aperture and LED flash. That’s a downgrade from last year’s Galaxy J3. While the front camera remains unchanged with a 5MP selfie shooter featured on the Galaxy J3 (2018). The front-facing camera of the Galaxy J3 (2018) has no LED flash.

Powering both J3 smartphones is Exynos 7570 chipset with Mali-T720 MP2 GPU. The Exynos 7570 chip comes with a Quad-core processor that clocks at 1.4GHz. Samsung is kind of holding back when it comes to the specs of their budget phones.

The Galaxy J3 (2017) runs on Samsung experience skin on top Android 7.0 Nougat. While the Galaxy J3 (2018) runs on Android 8.0 Oreo with Samsung experience skin on top. Both smartphones are only available in a 2GB memory with 16GB internal storage. The storage of both phones is expandable through a microSD slot up to 256GB.

The Galaxy J3 (2017) runs on a non-removable Li-lon 2400 battery. Whereas, Samsung has increased it a bit for the Galaxy J3 (2018). The 2018 Galaxy J3 runs on Li-lon 2600 battery.

The Galaxy J3 (2017) cost around $175 (€150). Whereas, the Galaxy J3 (2018) goes for around $199 (€170). I don’t really see any upgrade Samsung made here. The Samsung Galaxy J3 (2017) still comes out very good against its successor.
