Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus VS Huawei Mate 10 Pro – Which one of these high-end flagships comes out on top? Despite being released in November 2017, Huawei Mate 10 Pro is still capable of challenging most high-end smartphones released in 2024. The smartphone is a powerful device with high-end hardware and software features. It was even voted the best smartphone of 2017 by Android Authority over the likes Samsung Galaxy S8, LG V30 and Google Pixel 2 XL.

Samsung has gone on to release the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus which offers some amazing features. The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus being the advanced version is one of the best smartphones of 2018. It features a rare dual aperture in the rear primary lens. We can all agree the Huawei Mate 10 Pro was a better smartphone in general to the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. But what about Samsung’s new upgrade? Is Huawei Mate 10 Pro still better than the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus?

The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus’s back and the front is made up of glass (Corning gorilla glass 5) with an aluminum frame. Which is what the Huawei Mate 10 Pro features too. Although the type of its glass isn’t specified. The fingerprint sensor of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is at back, just below their dual-camera setup. Coincidental right? The rear LED flash of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is to the left side of the camera. While for the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, the LED flash is to the right side of the camera.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus comes thicker, measuring 8.5mm. While the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is slimmer, measuring 7.9mm. Not only is the Huawei Mate 10 Pro slimmer, it’s also lighter in weight. The Mate 10 Pro weighs 178 grams while the S9 Plus weighs 189 grams. Both of them are water/dust resistant, with the Huawei Mate 10 Pro having an IP67 certified rating. While the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus has an IP68 certified rating.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is available in Lilac Purple, Titanium Gray, Coral Blue and Midnight Black body colors. While the Huawei Mate 10 Pro comes in Pink Gold, Mocha Brown, Titanium Gray and Midnight Blue body colors.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro’s 6.0-inch display has only thin bezels around the top and bottom. While Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus’s 6.2-inch display also has thin bezels at its top and bottom. They both feature OLED screens, with the Huawei Mate 10 Pro having an AMOLED capacitive touchscreen. While the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus houses a Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro display has a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels and an 18:9 aspect ratio (402 PPI density). While the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus sports a larger resolution of 1440 x 2960 pixels and an 18.5:9 aspect ratio (529 PPI density). The Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protects the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. While an unspecified version of the Corning Gorilla Glass protects the Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

Both smartphones offer great camera quality. According to DxOMark, they are among the top ten smartphones with the best camera quality. The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus houses a dual 12MP f/1.5-2.4 aperture and 12MP f/2.4 aperture rear camera. And also an 8MP f/1.7 aperture selfie camera.

While the Huawei Mate 10 Pro sports, it’s own dual rear camera. And a resolution of 12MP f/1.6 aperture and 20MP f/1.6 aperture. The front camera comes with a resolution of 8MP f/2.0 aperture.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro features Android 8.0 Oreo with the company’s EMUI 8.0 skin on top. While the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus also runs on Android 8.0 Oreo with Samsung experience launcher. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro uses Huawei’s most powerful chipset; HiSilicon Kirin 970 with 8-cores processor reaching a speed of 2.4GHz. Which is also found in the likes of Huawei P20 Pro, Honor View 10 and Honor 10. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is available in 4GB RAM with 64GB ROM and also 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM.

While the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus uses the newest and latest chipset from Snapdragon. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset with Octa-core processor reaching a speed 2.7GHz. The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus comes with a 6GB RAM and three variants of internal storage; 64, 128 and 256GB.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro comes out on top here with its non-removable Li-Po 4000 mAh battery. It offers Fast battery charging 4.5V/5A, which charges from 0% to 58% in 30 mins and 0% to 90% in an hour. The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus runs on a non-removable Li-Ion 3500 mAh battery. The S9 Plus also comes with fast battery charging. And Qi wireless charging which isn’t featured on the Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is available for about $1,203 (N421,050). While the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is available for around $790 (N276,500). The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus offers more than the Huawei Mate 10 Pro. But it’s still not enough to warrant the gap in price between the two smartphones.
