Two years after the introduction of the original Gear S3 smartwatch, Samsung should at the end of next summer announce the successor that could be called Galaxy Watch – and not Gear S4. The debut is expected after the event Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2018 scheduled for August 9, a day that could, therefore, be dedicated only to the new Galaxy Note9 and Galaxy Tab S4. The last two generations of Gear smartwatches have been announced at the IFA in Berlin at the end of August.
Last year, Samsung at IFA 2017 unveiled the Gear Sports smartwatch, which is primarily an update of the Gear S3 (available in Classic and Frontier versions) with new fitness features, while the design and most of the specifications are shared.
According to what has emerged today via Sammobile, the South Korean company has been working in recent months on the development of a new smartwatch model number SM-R800 with codename Galileo, whose commercial name should be Galaxy Watch. Gear S3 Classic and Gear S3 Frontier have the model numbers SM-R770 and SM-R760 respectively while Gear Sport has the model number SM-R600.
Regarding the name, since Samsung has applied to the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office, the administrative body in charge of issuing patents and trademarks registered in the US) to register the “Galaxy Watch” and “Galaxy Fit” brands it is assumed that the company’s next smartwatch will not be called Gear S4 but will be called “Galaxy Watch”.
Sammobile has reported that the Samsung smartwatch is known by the codename Galileo will be available internally in two sizes and should arrive with more fitness capabilities than Gear S3 (like Gear Sport) and offer more in-depth sleep monitoring. At the moment there is no other information.
According to a series of patents granted to Samsung, the Galaxy Watch could come with the possibility of integrating one or even two thin and flexible batteries inside the straps to have a longer autonomy or with a secondary display, which can be integrated into the Swivel – by turning the ring you can access a secondary menu that can only be viewed on the display surrounding the central dial.
