Before we go into today’s business, I hope there’s no one here who still opines or thinks that StarTimes is only a pay TV? Or maybe you only know Startimes to be only into digital TV services. Well, if you’re reading this and you never knew, or you knew but wasn’t sure, that StarTimes produces mobile phones, now you know… and can also be sure.

Startimes Mobile is a wing of the Startimes Group. StarTimes Mobile is a high-tech company that focuses on mobile phone production, design, development, and sales. The company produces/have produced both feature and smartphones.

Furthermore, the company currently produces devices under two series/categories – the Solar and Planet series.

The Solar Note is a high-end smartphone under the Solar series from StarTimes Mobile. Let’s have a look at what the device is made of and can do.

DESIGN

Design-wise and also in terms of appearance, the Solar Note is a 9 out of a 10. The appearance is catchy. The Solar Note has a design that is appealing to the eyes… a design that arrests ones view.

The Solar Note comes in Black and Grey colour variant.

At the back, the back cover has a leathery feel and a full surface. It is also dust and fingerprint resistant. The camera, flashlight and speaker arrangement are so neat and deserves an applause.

The front view is also simple. The screen top houses the proximity sensor, front camera and the earpiece. The soft navigation keys are placed at the bottom of the display screen. The 3.5mm earphone jack is at the top of the device, the volume keys and power/lock button at the right side and the charging port at the bottom.

DISPLAY

Handling display on the Solar Note is a big 5.5-inch screen that displays in High Definition (HD). The display has a 720×1280 resolution and a 178 degree in-plane switching technology which StarTimes claims will deliver colour consistency and good images from almost any angle on the device.

PROCESSOR & OS

The Solar Note is super fast. Thanks to the fast ARM Cortex A7 processor StarTimes utilized on this device. The Cortex A7 is known to give the best performance while consuming little battery power. The Octa-core processor is also fast at 1.4 Ghz CPU frequency/speed.

The device comes out of the box with Android 4.4 KitKat and has an impressive 2GB RAM. Internal memory is pegged at 16GB but can be expanded to up to 32GB using an external SDcard.

CAMERA

The primary camera on the Solar Note is an impressive 16MP snapper. With the LED flash, the rear camera captures moments beautifully and in the highest quality possible.

The 8MP front camera also does justice to selfies. Although it lacks flash but selfies are well lighted enough and utterly visible and of good quality. Nice one from StarTimes.

BATTERY

The powerhouse on this device is a 2,700 mAh Li-ion battery. The device will last long dues to the little energy consumption of the Cortex A7 processor.

CONCLUSION

StarTimes wants-in in the Smartphone industry. This device is a great one – great processor, amazing cameras and good RAM. However, StarTimes could use some improvements in the Operating System department. Android 4.4 KitKat is old… and with no hope of an OTA update, one is just stuck with an outdated OS.

The Solar Note is a shot in the sky by StarTimes, let’s see how many birds it will hit.
