A few months ago, we got to see Xiaomi’s patent for a phone design that features a twisting camera module and a rotating camera. A few weeks later, patents of a smartphone design that features a foldable screen and a selfie camera that pops up also surfaced online.
Currently, the company has filed yet another patent for a smartphone design that features a very unique camera module. The camera module in the patent is designed in such a way that users will not be able to see the selfie camera sensors when they are not using it.
Right away, we already know that the company wants to achieve with this design. It wants a smartphone that will have as much space as possible on the front to house the display. To achieve this, it will not place a selfie camera on the front. Instead, the entire space on the front side of the phone will be covered with a display.
The images from the patent reveal a rotating design that works in such a way that when users want to use the selfie camera, the module rotates then revealing the camera sensor. Since it has 360-degree rotation support, the camera can also pop out from the side of the phone.
Xiaomi could also implement this design patent on their phones instead of the under-display camera technology. It could also replace the current pop-up camera mechanism on some of their phones. Just a few days ago, Visionox announced that it was ready to commence mass production of in-display camera technology. Some companies have however stated that the technology isn’t quite ready yet to be used on flagship smartphones.
We would love to see what Xiaomi can come up with using this patent. For now, all we can do is wait and since not all patents see the light of the day, we might never even see it get implemented.
