Am sure you’re also excited about the latest flagship from Xiaomi. At an event organized by the Chinese OEM company to celebrate their 8th anniversary, they unveiled the Xiaomi Mi 8, Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer edition and Xiaomi Mi 8 SE (Special Edition). If you’re a fan of Xiaomi, you probably know what to expect. Simply put that Xiaomi offers pure value for money.

For this article, the new Xiaomi Mi 8 will go head to head with the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S. A quick heads-up, both smartphones feature the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S has been Xiaomi’s flagship since its release. And now it has a new competitor called the Xiaomi Mi 8. Unfortunately for all lovers of the famous Xiaomi’s ceramic back, the new Xiaomi Mi 8 comes with a disappointment. Xiaomi ditched the ceramic back for a glass back on the Xiaomi Mi 8. So the phone features a front and back glass with aluminum 7000 series as frame separating both glasses. While the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S features the famous ceramic back with a front glass and aluminum frame. The Xiaomi Mi 8 comes in a reduced thickness and weight compared to the Mi Mix 2S. The Mi 8 weighs 175 grams and 7.6mm thick while the Mi Mix 2S weighs 191 grams and 8.1mm thick.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 becomes Xiaomi’s first smartphone to feature a notch display. We all knew it was only a matter of time before they joined that trend. The notch display on the Xiaomi Mi 8 is long compared to some other smartphones. The notch houses a 20MP front camera, Proximity sensor, Earpiece, Infrared lightning and Infrared lens. While the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S features a tri-bezel-less display, meaning no bezel or notch at the top screen. The 5MP front camera of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is placed at the bottom bezel.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 and Mix 2S are not resistance to water or dust, which is something people would’ve actually wanted. At the back of the Mi 8 and Mi Mix 2S, you’ll find a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a dual rear camera at the top left corner. The Mi Mix 2S comes in just Black and White body colors. While the Xiaomi Mi 8 spice things up with Black, Blue, White and Gold body colors. The Xiaomi Mi 8 supports Face ID, which uses a separate sensor called “Infrared lens”. Most phones use their front camera for Facial recognition. Xiaomi is simply being innovative and breaking boundaries.

Am sure no one saw this coming, as the Xiaomi Mi 8 features a Super AMOLED touchscreen. The screen is one of the best screen technology in the market and its great to finally have it on a Xiaomi smartphone. The Mi 8 features a 6.21-inch screen with an 83.8% screen-to-body ratio. While on the Mi Mix 2S is a 5.99 inch IPS LCD touchscreen with an 81.9% screen-to-body ratio.

The display of the Mi Mix 2S packs a 1080 x 2160 pixels resolution, 403 pixels per inch density with an 18:9 aspect ratio. While the Mi 8’s display packs a 1080 x 2248 pixels resolution, 402 pixels per inch with an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. The screen technology of the Mi 8 makes it an obvious winner in the display department. The Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protects the screen of the Mi Mix 2S. While an unspecified version protects that of the Mi 8. You can rest assured it’s either glass 4 or a better glass 5 for the Mi 8.

The dual rear camera of the Xiaomi Mi 8 is the same with the Mi Mix 2S. The dual rear camera consists of a 12MP primary sensor with f/1.8 aperture and a 12MP secondary with f/2.4 aperture. The difference is the new picture technology incorporated into the Xiaomi Mi 8 such as AI-enhanced portrait photography. At the front camera, you get a 5MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture on the Mi Mix 2S. And a whopping 20MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture on the Mi 8. The front camera of the Mi 8 features AI portrait selfies and AI Beautify. To sum it all up, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S scored 97 points while Xiaomi Mi 8 scored 99 points in the overall rating by DxOMark.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 and Mi Mix 2S is being powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset with Adreno 630 graphics processing unit. The Snapdragon 845 chipset carries 4-cores clocked at 2.8GHz and 4-cores clocked at 1.8GHz. Running on the Mi Mix 2S is MiUI 9.5 skin with Android 8.0 Oreo underneath it. While for the Mi 8 is Xiaomi’s new MiUI 10.0 skin with Android 8.1 Oreo. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S should be able to upgrade to the latest MiUI 10.0.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 comes in only a 6GB memory with either 64GB, 128GB or 256GB storage. While the Mi Mix 2S comes in two memory variants; 6GB or 8GB memory. The 6GB memory comes with either 64GB or 128GB storage. While the 8GB memory comes with 256GB storage.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S host a non-removable Li-lon 3400 mAh battery. While the Mi 8 packs a non-removable Li-Po 3400 mAh battery. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S supports quick charge 3.0 while the Mi 8 supports the 4.0 version. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S supports Qi wireless charging, which Xiaomi have ditched for the new Mi 8. Not sure that’s a good move by Xiaomi as some fans have criticized them for that.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is being sold for around $600 (N210,000), which is surprisingly expensive compared to $515 (N180,250). The Xiaomi Mi 8 features some great improvement from the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S and is cheaper. Obviously, the winner here is the Xiaomi Mi 8.
