Xiaomi Mi Band 3 VS Xiaomi Mi Band 2 – the upgrades in the new Xiaomi fitness tracker. Chinese OEM company Xiaomi recently released a couple of smartphones and gadgets in an event held in Shenzhen, China. The products includes their latest flagships; the Xiaomi Mi 8, Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer (with translucent back), Xiaomi Mi 8 Special edition, 75-inch Xiaomi TV 4, Xiaomi Mi VR Standalone Headset, Xiaomi MIUI 10 user interface and Xiaomi Mi Band 3. The focus of this article is Xiaomi’s new fitness tracker; the Xiaomi Mi Band 3.

The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 is a successor to 2016’s Xiaomi Mi Band 2. The first generation of the Mi Band fitness tracker was released in 2014, so we might be expecting a new Mi Band by 2020. Well, both the Xiaomi Mi Band and Mi Band 2 were met with great reception, especially the Mi Band 2 being sold out in most online shopping stores. The design is not totally different from the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 and Xiaomi Mi Band 3. Both fitness trackers are designed in the same body-friendly thermoplastic elastomer material. They both use the company’s signature wristband style, with the new Xiaomi Mi Band 3 featuring a more solid and tighter strap, which should prevent falling off. The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 and Mi Band 2 are available in only black color. But the strap (which is interchangeable) on the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 comes in Black, Blue and Orange colors.

In terms of weight, the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 is lighter with a weight of 7 grams. While the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 weighs 8.5 grams. Obviously, there will be some new features in the Mi Band 3 which could be the reason for the weight. Overall, the major difference in design of the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 and Mi Band 3 is the new strap colors available for the Xiaomi Mi Band 3. The Xiaomi Mi Band features a touch key interactive style while the Mi Band 3 features a touch key and touch screen interactive style.

They’re both waterproof with the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 having an IP67 certified rating. While the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 features a 5ATM waterproof protection. What this means is that the Mi Band 2 can only survive when submerged in a 1-meter depth of water while the Mi Band 3 can survive in 50 meters depth of water. The Xiaomi Mi Band 2 measures 40.3 x 15.7 x 10.5 mm in dimensions while the Mi Band 3 measures 46.9 × 17.9 × 12 mm.

The display is where you will see a significant upgrade from the Mi Band 2 to the Mi Band 3. The Xiaomi Mi Band 2 features a 0.48 inch OLED display with 40 x 72 pixels resolution. While the Mi Band 3 features a 0.78-inch PMOLED display, 80 x 128 pixels resolution and 193 pixels per inch density. According to Xiaomi, the Mi Band 3 can display over 23 Chinese characters at the same time. And the 193 PPI featured on the Mi Band 3 is the highest pixels per inch custom display smart band in the market. The bigger screen on the Mi Band 3 displays incoming calls and text message alerts.

Both smartwatches are among the best when it comes to keeping track with your fitness activity. You can sync the smart bands with your smartphone through a dedicated app and it will enable you to pick/reject calls and respond to text messages from your wrist. The Xiaomi Mi Band 2 and Mi Band 3 features a heart rate monitor, pedometer and sleep monitor. There’s also a Mi Fit App which helps in tracking activity such as sleep, step count, and heart-rate data. You can even set workout goals or compete with friends using the Mi Fit App.

The Xiaomi Mi Band 2 features Bluetooth 4.0 and compatible with Android 4.4+ and iOS 7.0+. While the Mi Band 3 features a better Bluetooth 4.2 and it’s compatible with Android 4.4 and above as well as iOS 9.0 and other bigger iOS versions. The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 also promises an improved NFC functionality, which will enable quick/easy payments from your wristband.

The Xiaomi Mi Band 2 is available for around $36.63 (N13,200) while the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 is sold for around $34.59 (N12,500) with discounts. Both wristbands offer great quality-price ratio. The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 comes with improved features but it shouldn’t total beat the Mi Band 2 off the market. The Xiaomi Mi Band 2 is a cheaper choice for users who want to use the Mi wristband without spending much.
