Amazon Echo troubleshooting guide

Amazon Echo has really taken off. Certainly more than I imagined, and probably more than Amazon hoped. It is now in millions of homes and helps us do anything, describing the weather, playing our favorite music, checking smart homes or telling us jokes.

However, it’s not all that simple as there are some common problems that arise from your new Alexa. Here’s what this Amazon Echo troubleshooting guide deals with. I will talk about the five most common problems you may have with your new device and I will advise you what you can do to solve them.

Amazon Echo does not connect to Wi-Fi

Echo’s inability to maintain a WiFi connection is a very common problem, but it is relatively easy to resolve. Two options are available, restore the wireless connection and restart Echo or use an app to check the WiFi signal strength.

Restore your WiFi:

  1. Turn off Amazon Echo.
  2. Turn off the wireless router and/or modem.
  3. Leave off for a minute.
  4. Turn everything back on and wait another minute.
  5. Retry your WiFi connection.

Sometimes Amazon Echo disconnects from WiFi due to a poor signal. If WiFi works with other devices, download an app to check the WiFi signal strength, pay attention to Echo and check the signal strength. If you see low-power Wi-Fi networks or others that use the same channel, change the WiFi channel to a different one and try again.

I’m sorry, I don’t understand the question

Alexa is smart. Really smart, but it’s not perfect. Even if you have trained your Eco to your voice, you might still hear “I’m sorry, I don’t understand the question”. There is a learning curve for voice recognition. The more you use Echo, the better the recognition of accents and commands.

Sometimes it doesn’t matter how long you’ve used it, you’ll still hear the message. Select Alexa settings and history to check what you have heard. If it doesn’t look like what you said, repeat the workout. If it is similar to what you said, repeat the command more clearly and see what happens.

To use voice training again, select Settings and Voice training in the Alexa app.

Alexa doesn’t respond at all

The Echo has several microphones, it could hear a pin falling a mile away, although it may happen that Alexa does not respond. Looks like you’re ignoring it on purpose. In this case, you can restart Echo to see if it solves the problem or go through voice training as above.

While it takes a couple of minutes to retrain it to recognize and respond to your voice, it’s the only way I know how to make Echo work in this case again.

Alexa does not connect to Bluetooth

Echo can be paired with Bluetooth speakers and other peripherals to offer extra functionality. It is possible that the connection is interrupted or that you cannot connect at all. Usually, the solution is very simple, just restart these devices to make them work again.

  1. Open the Alexa app and select Settings.
  2. Select your Eco and Bluetooth.
  3. Select Delete in Delete all associated devices.
  4. Select Pairing Mode in the same window or say “pair” to Alexa.
  5. Make sure your Bluetooth device is also in pairing mode and let it be.

Reproduction on the wrong device

Amazon Echo may have its own speaker but it can also play music or multimedia content on other devices. You have to configure them but using a voice command you can tell Alexa which device you want to use. If the problem persists, you may need to reset the device in the app.

  1. Open the Alexa app and select Settings.
  2. Select Devices and make sure the playback device is still present.
  3. Make sure no default playback device is set. Remove the default value if there is one.
  4. Select Edit, then Delete to remove the playback device from the group.

Once removed, you can re-add the playback device to Alexa and hopefully, it will work properly again. For some reason, having a default playback device can interfere with playback even if you specify which device you want to use.

Amazon Echo is a very powerful intelligent speaker and it gets smarter. While the improvement is constant, there are still common problems to deal with once you’ve brought Alexa into your life. We hope this Amazon Echo troubleshooting guide can help.
