Another Gaming Behemoth – Aorus X7 v6 Laptop Review

The Aorus X7 v6

The Aorus X7 v6 is an offering by laptop manufacturer Gigabyte under its Aorus brand. Starting at under $2500, this laptop is one of the best gaming laptops in a slim package. Even better is the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 graphics chip and a powerful Intel Core i7 CPU. With a two-year warranty period, the X7 is a wonderful gaming laptop by many standards. Let’s continue to know more.

Design

At 7.2 pounds and just 1 inch thick, the Aorus X7 v6 is a light and maybe not so thin laptop. Although it isn’t the slimmest laptop – there are thinner alternatives, it is still very portable especially for a gaming laptop. Other dimensions for the X7 are a width of 16.1 inches and 12.1 inches deep.

For the frame, Aorus used aluminum for the lid with a black color theme. Atop the lid is the Aorus logo – a hawk head. Still, on the lid, it is connected to the lower half of the laptop by a single large hinge making it easy to open the laptop with one hand. Upon opening the X7, a low-res webcam sits above the high-res screen with the Aorus brand name positioned beneath the screen.

The lower half of the X7 houses the keyboard, touchpad, air vents, and the other internal hardware components besides the screen. The four air vents are distributed in this manner – two at the backside of the deck, and the other two at both sides – left and right. The thermal design ensures that the X7 is properly ventilated. Lastly, at the lower sides – right and left – of the X7 lower half are the speaker grills.

Display

A large 17.3-inch display is fitted in the Aorus X7 v6. The sharp display has an average color reproduction in a high 2560 x 1440 pixels resolution. In addition, the brightness level on this screen is below average and could have been better.

Furthermore, this display has a 120Hz refresh rate and comes with support for Nvidia G-Sync (one of the first laptops that feature G-Sync). Response times for this display are on the fast lane at 5ms. Bezels on this laptop are large as with conventional gaming laptops.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Moving on, the Aorus X7 sports an island-style keyboard with programmable backlighting via the included AorusKeyboard application. The keys spacing is not so much and, just so you know, there is no number pad on the keyboard.

The touchpad is a pleasing piece to behold as the Aorus ‘hawk’ emblem is also seen on it. The touchpad sits just below the keyboard and has good responsiveness.

Performance

Desktop power in a portable package; at the heart of the Aorus X7 is a sixth generation Core i7 processor (Intel Core i7-6820HK) clocked at 2.7 GHz. For extra power, this old processor can be pushed to 4.0 GHz.

A GTX 1070 GPU with 8GB of VRAM is part of the hardware package of the X7. This invariably means that users will get seamless gaming and viewing experiences. In addition, this VR-ready laptop renders images and videos at high frame rates, even on 1080p.

A power-efficient but fast DDR4 RAM setup also adds to the smooth running of this laptop. The 16GB of RAM can be expanded to a 64GB maximum. Just like with many modern gaming laptops, the Aorus X7 v6 features a dual storage combination. A fast 512GB SSD is paired with a slower 2TB HDD.

Battery Life

For all the power that the Aorus X7 v6 wields, it is carried by its poor battery life. Based on the task being run, the X7 can deliver an average of fewer than 3 hours on battery.

Ports and Connectivity

This laptop is not lacking in ports as it is filled with an array of essential ports. Behind the deck are the power jack and a USB 3.0 port while two other USB 3.0 ports, one type-C USB port, a mini DisplayPort, an SD card reader, Ethernet, and two HDMI ports are spread on either side of the device.

Price and Availability

You can get a hold of the Aorus X7 v6 from most online stores at a minimum of $2300. Given the design and high-end hardware internals found on this laptop, the price is quite justifiable.
