Let us quickly take a look at some of the CUBOT Rainbow phone specs and features. Now let’s get to it.
DESIGN
Talking about design, the Cubot Rainbow is kept quite simple. The design is just simple, not too loud. The body is made of plastic and it weighs 163g; quite heavy! The Rainbow is of 8.9mm thick, 142mm long and 72mm in wide.
At the top right corner of the rear side of the device, you can find the camera with a LED flash light. Speaker is midly placed at the bottom of the device back. The volume controller and power/lock button are on the right side of the mobile.
On the front, you’ll find the three common Android soft touch buttons sitting comfortably beneath the screen. And lastly, the 3.5mm earphone jack and USB charging port were engineered to stay at the top left on the Rainbow top.
DISPLAY
The Rainbow comes with a 5-inch IPS-LCD type of display. The screen resolution is 720 x 1280 pixels and pixel density is 294 pixels per inch (ppi). The screen resolution will provide good image quality with nice viewing angles and image contrasting. It also handle brightness well and can be used outdoor without squinting the eyes to see figures.
One other feature of the screen is the precise 5 point touch ability. The screen can handle and recognize multiple touches of up to 5 fingers.
PROCESSOR & OS
Being a low-budget smartphone, Cubot utilized the low-end Mediatek MTK6580 chipset on the Cubot Rainbow. Quadcore and processor speed of 1.3GHz can only handle not-heavy device functions. The processor is just suitable to handle some messaging apps like Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter and maybe watch movies and read books. Multitasking and other heavy 3D games and application will make the Rainbow freeze and lag. Why? Because the combination of the Mali 400 GPU graphics processor and meagre 1GB RAM isn’t powerful enough to handle such processes.
The Android Marshmallow 6.0 is pre-installed on the Cubot Rainbow. With Google Playstore app also pre-installed, you can download other games and application you need. Internal storage is 16GB and can be extended with a micro SD card to up to 128GB
CAMERA
At the rear side of the device, you find a 13 megapixel camera with an f/2.0 aperture. Though a low-budget smartphone, it manages to produce outstanding and super sharp pictures with great colour quality. The Autofocus functions properly and it also has a shutter time of 0.5 seconds. Super cool!
Moving to the front camera, there is a 5 megapixels selfie shooter that can take average looking selfies and video chat.
BATTERY
The Cubot Rainbow battery capacity is pegged at 2200mAh. This can give you an average usage time of about 7 house. This is however subject to strength, quality and quantity of usage. But looking at the processor and 5 inch screen, plus the Android Marshmallow OS which provides good battery optimization, the battery juice should be sufficient to handle processes on this device for a good period of time.
VERDICT
The Cubot Rainbow is a good-looking Android device that runs on the Android Marshmallow 6.0 OS. Great camera, 5 inch screen, 16GB ROM and 2,200 battery capacity, it is worthy every penny of the $60 it’s worth. The only downsides are the processor and 1GB RAM which could occasionally make the device lag.
