General Mobile GM 5 Review – The “Android One” Nougat v7.1.1 Mid-ranger

General Mobile is a Turkish mobile and tablet brand that was established in 2005 in the USA. The company is also a partner of Google’s Android One initiative. This makes General Mobile one of the several partners Google has in its bid to take the low-cost ‘pure Android’ smartphone experience to various nations across the world

Right from inception, General Mobile has adopted simplicity as its strategy and defines it as 4 main elements: Product, Price, Channel and Post-Sales. General Mobile have launched several devices with lovely and unique features. We will be taking a look at a product from the USA based OEM today – the General Mobile GM 5.

DESIGN

The General Mobile GM 5 is a beautifully crafted device. With a plastic build, roughly textured back cover and slim feel, holding this beauty in the hands isn’t a burdensome task. The GM 5 has dimension 140.50mm x 69.75mm x 9.30mm (height x width x thickness) and weighs 160.00 grams. The company design department did a really great job on the GM 5 design I must say. Being a budget device, the design makes it seem like the GM 5 is a high-end premium smartphone.

On the rear, you’d find the roughly textured back cover with a tiny “androidone” inscribed at about 3/4 towards the device bottom. The big primary camera and the LED flashlight also sits right above the General Mobile logo.

Turning the GM 5 to the front reveals a simple look with the selfie camera, proximity sensor and earpiece (which is uniquely round and centrally placed).

The General Mobile GM 5 comes with a 5.00-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 720 pixels by 1280 pixels. The HD screen offers a wide range of colors and the 294 ppi pixel density makes images more crisp, clear and vibrant.

PROCESSOR & OS

Processes on the General Mobile GM 5 are powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. This processor is enough for fast and fluid running of the device. The 2GB RAM also ensures that multitasking on the GM 5 is without lag. The phone has an internal storage space of 16GB which can be expanded with the use of a microSD card.

Being an Android One device, the GM 5 will run on any of the latest Android OS from Google. The GM 5 runs on the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

CAMERA

The GM 5 has some perks in the camera department. As for the rear camera, General Mobile GM 5 packs a 13-megapixel snapper. The rear camera produces sharp, well-defined and properly focused photos. For the selfie lovers, the 5-megapixel front shooter should be enough to handle your Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and Skype needs.

BATTERY

The powerhouse of the GM 5 houses a 2,500mAh.The battery juice is enough to run the device for periods between 8-12 hours. Heavy smartphone users may not get the best out of the GM 5 battery capacity.

CONCLUSION

The General Mobile GM 5 is a really nice budget mid-range smartphone. Running on the latest Android v7.1.1 Nougat and the Snapdragon processor, the GM 5 is really promising. The cameras, both primary and secondary, are superb. Despite having a nice design, General Mobile could work on giving their future smartphones a small bezel/screen-to-body ratio and improved battery capacity.
