Google will soon update the chat app on Android with support for RCS. RCS is a new message standard that will eventually replace text messages.
According to the website The Verge, the Android app receives support for RCS, short for Rich Communication Services. Google hopes smartphones manufacturers will switch from SMS to RCS in the future. RCS has more options, such as a better layout. You can also send pictures and videos and start group discussions. RCS can thus be compared to chat apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram.
KPN, Vodafone, and T-Mobile parent company Deutsche Telekom have already indicated two years ago that they will support the new standard, but at the moment several providers have not yet implemented this support. If the provider of the receiver or the sender does not yet have support for RCS, the message will automatically change to a text message.
