Hard to Beat – Welcome the PowerSpec 1510 Gaming Laptop

Micro Center’s in-house gaming laptop, the PowerSpec 1510 is a great wonderful laptop that comes at a really decent price. However, you can only lay your hands on this laptop at any Micro Center retail store.

This laptop is one of the best gaming laptops out there with an impressive hardware combination. Lacking in aesthetics but brimming with exciting hardware, the PowerSpec 1510 is a promising laptop that wants to shift your gaze from the more expensive gaming laptops that you already know.

Enough of the preamble, let’s get into it already!

Design

The PowerSpec 1510 is the smaller of two identical laptop models; the larger being the PowerSpec 1710. Dimensions for this device are 15.25 x 10.75 x 1.25 inches and weighs about 6 pounds. While this laptop is not the slimmest or lightest, it is nonetheless very portable.

The PowerSpec 1510 comes in a not-so-brilliant mostly black chassis. The chassis which is made by Clevo is mainly plastic with some faux-aluminum paintings. Atop the lid is the silver colored PowerSpec logo.

A probable but good reason for this bulkiness is the high-end hardware included in the PowerSpec 1510. When you have a Core i7-7700HQ CPU, a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 GPU, and other jaw-dropping internals, you are sure going to need a lot of space to fit them.

Display

The PowerSpec 1510 houses a 15.6-inch Full HD display that is really bright. Also, color reproduction and contrast are great on this display. It should interest you to know that this screen has support for Nvidia’s G-Sync technology although it is disabled by default.

Watching videos or playing your favorite games on this screen will definitely be a pleasurable experience, thanks to the excellent sRGB color gamut of the screen. Also, above the display is a great 1080p webcam to capture images or video chatting.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard of the PowerSpec 1510 has a deep 2.2 mm key travel which is more than the average (1.5 to 2 mm). The keys are neatly arranged and include a number pad. With the sRGB backlighting and GameFeet software, individual key backlighting can be adjusted to suit your needs.

What can be said about the touchpad other than that it is very responsive and supports multi-finger gestures? Beneath the mouse are two clickable buttons separated by a fingerprint reader for improved security.

Performance

Performance-wise, the 1510 has a lot to offer. With a seventh-generation Core i7 CPU, 16gigs of RAM, and a GTX 1070 GPU (with 8GB of VRAM), it leaves less to be desired in terms of gaming performance. This laptop is also VR-ready with native support for popular VR headsets like the Oculus Rift.

For storage, a 256GB SSD is paired with a slower but more spacious 1TB HDD. Conversely, with the fans and cooling system, the PowerSpec 1510 still gets really warm, especially on high settings and usage.

Battery Life

It seems like most manufacturers are yet to get it right with battery life, particularly for gaming laptops. On a full charge, the PowerSpec 1510 can deliver up to 4 hours of gaming time – depending on the settings and game.

Ports and Connectivity

It will interest you to know that there are two mini DisplayPorts, one HDMI out, a headphone jack, microphone jack, and an optical jack. The list goes on with an SD card reader, three USB 3.0 ports, RJ-45 slot, a Kensington Lock slot in addition to a SIM card slot. Disappointingly, there is no type-C USB port (what a shocker).

Pricing and Availability

For $1300, the PowerSpec 1510 is a great bang for the bucks, especially if you don’t bother about big brand names. However, you can only lay your hands on a copy of this laptop if you have Micro Center store close to you.

Conclusion

Boasting a high-end CPU and GPU combo, including a decent build and display, the PowerSpec 1510 is gaming laptop that strikes as a challenger for the more pricier and popular gaming laptops. If you can get over the warming issue and get a quality gaming headphone, this system would be a great buy.
