Sony Released the 48-Megapixel IMX586 Sensor With 4K 90FPS Recording Capabilities

The largest sensor on the smartphone is held by the 41-Megapixel Nokia Lumia 1020 which was launched in 2013. But this record will be broken by devices using Sony’s latest sensor launched today.

The Sony IMX586 sensor is a 48-Megapixel size (8000 × 6000 pixels) with each pixel of 0.8 μm. This means that sharper and clearer pictures can be taken using a smartphone. Using the Quad Bayer array, clear images can be taken even in low lighting situations at 12-Megapixel resolution. Maximum video recording resolution is 4K 90FPS and 720P 480FPS.

The IMX586 sensor will only start producing in September. This means that it’s probably not used on the Sony Xperia XZ3 which was launched in late August.
