Nokia 8 Sirocco VS Nokia 7 Plus – Nokia’s high-end and mid-range smartphones. HMD Global revived the Nokia brand of smartphones during last year. The company owned by former employees of Nokia said going forward the company will be committing to the Android One platform. During the 2018 Mobile World Congress, the company announced three sets of smartphones; the Nokia 6 (2018), the Nokia 8 Sirocco and Nokia 7 Plus. And one thing that made the Nokia smartphones stand out, was their ability to receive timely updates from Android OS software.

The strategy adopted by HMD Global was to come out with a smartphone that would challenge all segments of the market. The Nokia 8 Sirocco is a high-end smartphone, the Nokia 7 Plus is an upper mid-range smartphone and the Nokia 6 (2018) is a lower mid-range smartphone. They are yet to manufacture a budget smartphone though. Let’s see how their high-end Nokia 8 Sirocco tackles their upper mid-range Nokia 7 Plus. And find out if it’s worth going for the high-end or just sticking with the upper mid-range.

The Nokia 8 Sirocco being HMD’s flagship for the first half of 2018, comes in a front and back Corning gorilla glass with stainless steel. While the Nokia 7 Plus comes in a front glass and aluminum body, the frame is wrapped with copper. The Nokia 8 Sirocco measures 7.5 mm thick and is slimmer compared to the Nokia 7 Plus, which measures 8 mm thick. The Nokia 8 Sirocco is water/dust resistant with a certified IP67 rating. While the Nokia 7 Plus doesn’t have such certification.

The Nokia 8 Sirocco and Nokia 7 Plus has a dual rear camera setup and fingerprint sensor, which are positioned in the top middle on both devices. The Nokia 7 Plus comes in Black and White body colors. Both body colors feature the copper frame. While the Nokia 8 Sirocco comes in an only a Black body color.

They both have different display types, the Nokia 8 Sirocco comes in a P-OLED touchscreen. While the Nokia 7 Plus comes in an IPS LCD touchscreen. The Nokia 8 Sirocco has a display size of 5.5 inches with 16:9 aspect ratio. And a resolution of 1440 x 2560 with 534 PPI density. The display of the Nokia 8 Sirocco is protected by Corning gorilla glass 5.

The Nokia 7 Plus features a larger screen size of 6.0 inch with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and features a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels with 403 PPI density. Overall, the Nokia 7 Plus has a nice display spec for a mid-range smartphone.

On paper, the Nokia 7 Plus equals the Nokia 8 Sirocco in camera quality and even has better selfie camera. The Nokia 8 Sirocco sports a dual rear camera of 12MP f/1.8 primary sensor and 12MP f/2.6 secondary sensor. The dual rear camera features dual pixel phase detection autofocus, 2x optical zoom, Zeiss optics and dual-LED dual-tone flash. At the front camera of the Nokia 8 Sirocco is a 5MP f/2.0 shooter.

The Nokia 7 Plus features the same 12MP f/1.8 primary sensor like the Nokia 8 Sirocco. And then a 13MP f/2.6 secondary sensor. The dual rear camera of the Nokia 7 Plus features gyro EIS, dual pixel phase detection autofocus, Zeiss optics, 2x optical zoom and dual-LED dual-tone flash. The front camera sports a 16MP f/2.0 sensor and features Zeiss optics.

Powering the Nokia 8 Sirocco is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, which carries 4-cores clocked at 2.5GHz & 4-cores clocked at 1.8 GHz. The graphics is powered by Adreno 540 graphics processing unit. While the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chip powers the Nokia 7 Plus with 4-cores clocked at 2.2GHz and 4-cores clocked at 1.8GHz. The graphics of the Nokia 7 Plus is powered by Adreno 512 graphics processing unit. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chip has 8 CPU threads compared to 4 CPU threads found on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip. More CPU threads will result in faster performance and better multitasking. The Snapdragon 835 chip’s download speed is faster to the download speed of Snapdragon 660 chip.

Both the Nokia 7 Plus and the Nokia 8 Sirocco are Android One smartphone. They run on Android OS only and has no custom User Interface. Running on the Nokia 8 Sirocco is the Android 8.0 Oreo while the Android 8.1 Oreo runs on the Nokia 7 Plus. The Nokia 8 Sirocco comes with a 6GB memory and 128GB internal storage. While the Nokia 7 Plus comes with a 4GB memory and 64GB storage. The Nokia 7 Plus supports microSD while the Nokia 8 Sirocco doesn’t.

Surprisingly the Nokia 7 Plus has the better battery life to the Nokia 8 Sirocco. The Nokia 8 Sirocco packs a non-removable Li-Ion 3260 mAh battery that charges with USB 3.1, Type-C 1.0 reversible connector. While the Nokia 7 Plus packs a bigger non-removable Li-lon 3800 mAh battery that charges with USB 2.0, Type-C 1.0 reversible connector. They both support fast battery charging, with the Nokia 8 Sirocco featuring Qi wireless charging.

Nokia 8 Sirocco VS Nokia 7 Plus – The Price

The Nokia 8 Sirocco cost about $900 (N315,000) while the Nokia 7 Plus cost around $475 (N166,250). The Nokia 7 Plus has to be the perfect smartphone from Nokia in the first quarter of 2018. Though the Nokia 8 Sirocco features better display and hardware, it doesn’t equate to being twice the price of the Nokia 7 Plus.
