Sony has announced the Sony Xperia XZ at the IFA 2016 event in Berlin to add to its line of Xperia X smartphones. The Sony Xperia XZ is the company’s latest flagship featuring very powerful specifications and an equally high price tag.

The high point of the Sony Xperia XZ is its rear camera which uses a new technology to focus on objects and take pictures of their images. This new technology is called PHAF (remember PDAF?), and the full meaning I will reveal later in this article. Read on.
Sony Xperia XZ Specifications
Display & Design
The Sony Xperia XZ features a 5.2-inch Full HD display with pixel resolution of 1920 * 1080. The display uses Sony’s Triluminous technology, which according to the Japanese company makes your reds redder, your greens greener and makes your blues bluer. The screen on the Xperia XZ is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.
The Sony Xperia XZ has a fingerprint sensor which is located in an unusual place for a smartphone; in the Home button! The smartphone also possesses IP65 and IP68 certifications which means that it is water-resistant.
Memory & Performance
The Xperia XZ is powered by a 64-bit Snapdragon 820 processor with four processing cores which runs on the 14nm processor. This is paired with an Adreno 530 GPU to make sure the smartphone runs smoothly all the time.
The Sony Xperia XZ comes with 3GB RAM capacity, and is available in two internal storage variants with either 32GB ROM or 64GB ROM. The internal storage is expandable to up to 256GB via an external microSD card slot.
Battery
The Sony Xperia XZ packs a 2,900mAh battery which is equipped with Adaptive Charging technology by Qnovo to make sure it charges up fast enough for you to continue enjoying its vast expanse of features.
Connectivity
The 32GB ROM variant of the Sony Xperia XZ comes with a single SIM slot while the 64GB ROM variant comes with an option of a Dual SIM slot together with the micro SD card slot.
The Sony Xperia XZ supports 4G LTE network connectivity to allow you access things faster over-the-air. It is also equipped with dual band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, both bands with speeds of 2.4GHz and 5GHz respectively. The Wi-Fi channel uses MIMO technology which gives you double the capacity of a normal Wi-Fi radio.
The Sony Xperia XZ also comes with a lot of other connectivity features to make you enjoy your time with the phone. These includes Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy (LE), GPS with GLONASS for location determination and navigation, NFC, and a USB Type-C port which gives the smartphone USB OTG support, allowing you to share battery juice with another smartphone as well as use computer accessories with it.
Camera
The Sony Xperia XZ sports a powerful 23MP rear camera which is just the perfect camera for taking pictures at any point in time. The rear camera uses an Exmor RS Sensor, lens with f/2.0 aperture width, and 5-axis stabilization. The camera is able to record videos at 4K resolution, and uses a new Autofocus mechanism called Predictive Hybrid Auto Focus, which allows you to choose the subject in the image you want to capture, predicts the subject’s motion, and then captures a blur-free image in perfect focus.
The 13MP front camera bears some semblance to that found on the Sony Xperia X in that it uses a 22m wide-angle lens similar to the Xperia X’s selfie camera. The front camera also uses an Exmor RS sensor like the rear camera, uses lens with f/2.0 aperture, and can record videos at 1080p resolution.
The phone features a dedicated camera shutter button which allows you to take photos instantly when it is pressed.
Software and Hardware
On the hardware side, the Sony Xperia XZ offers quality audio features with Sony’s Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE HX™) which converts both compressed sound and uncompressed CD-quality sound to Hi-Resolution quality sound.
The smartphone uses Sony’s LDAC audio technology which affords you the luxury of high quality wireless audio streaming via Bluetooth. It uses speakers with Digital Noise Cancelling capabilities.
The Sony Xperia XZ boots Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box with the usual software customizations by Sony.

Both the Single SIM and Dual-SIM variants of the Sony Xperia XZ will be made available globally from October 2016 in Forest Blue, Platinum and Mineral Black colours.
We don’t have information on the price of the device yet, but we’re sure it’s going to be very expensive since it is a flagship device with brand new smartphone features.
