Earlier this year at the mobile world congress (MWC) Sony released two flagships which are the Xperia XZ Premium and Xperia XZs. The Xperia XZs is an upgrade to last year’s flagship Xperia XZ.The upgrade or improvements made to the flagship are very slight compared to its predecessor Xperia XZ. However, there are few hardware upgrades that put the device above the identical Sony Xperia XZ in terms of performance and value.
The most obvious of all the changes made to the Sony Xperia XZs is its ability to record slow motion videos. This sure makes the Sony Xperia more enjoyable is the addition of a lens that is capable of capturing 960 frames per second which is unlike everything you have ever seen. Nevertheless, the price Sony is asking for this smartphone is very much on a high side. Although it has an IP68 certification, dual SIM and slow motion recording is an advantage. This is not enough to justify its price tag considering that the nothing new apart from the slo-mo feature it offers.
DESIGN AND DISPLAY
The Xperia XZs features what Sony refers to as the loop design complete with rounded sides and tapers towards both the back and front that makes it feel comfortable in the hands. Which makes it more or less like its predecessors in terms of design or build quality. The loop design also features a flat top and bottom on which the phone can stand and is what the Xperia XZs and XZ have in common. Sony’s Xperia XZs comes with plastic along the sides, a glass up front and a metallic back panel.
A dedicated camera button, volume rocker and power button are all present at the right side. while the audio jack and USB port jack located at the top and bottom of the device. The device also comes with a 5.1 LCD display with a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution of about 424 ppi. However, if you are looking to use for VR, then I will advice that this is not the device for you as a Quad HD will be more ideal.
CPU, OS AND STORAGE
Not much has changed in the hardware section has the Xperia XZs still feature the same processor has the Xperia XZ. The Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC is paired with the Adreno 530 graphics processing unit (GPU). Although this is not the latest and most powerful processor anymore it still more than capable of handling daily intensive tasks.
Also, the internal memory has gone up a notch from the 3GB present in the Xperia XZ to 4GB. There are two variants with 32GB and 64GB respectively, however, this can be extended with a TF card to about 256GB. The Xperia XZs run an Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box with the latest UI from Sony.
BATTERY AND CAMERA
Another disappointing thing about the XperiaXZs is the fact that it still retains the same mediocre battery has the Xperia XZ of 2900 mAH. As it stands you get a 19 MP camera which might look like a downgrade from the 23 MP present in the Xperia XZ but this is not case. The front camera has a 13 MP sensor with flash.
