Packaging & Accessories

The packaging of the device is very cute, with the logo of We Love Photo, the brand of line Zenfone 4, in front. In the back, we have some technical information like IMEI and everything.

The box has a lid that comes out from above or below. And then we came across another box. Inside you have the standard kit and the chip ejector.

Underneath this second box, we found the device inside a protective plastic. Inside, it has a wall adapter, with 5V and 2A output; the USB data cable for micro USB, an in-ear headset, with microphone and button to answer calls, and extra buds. All in white.

Design & Display

The Asus Selfie Pro comes in red, black and gold color options. The device is lightweight, with only 147 grams, and dimensions of 154 mm in height, 74.8 in width and thickness of mere 6.8 mm. It is a wonderful device.

The volume and power buttons are on the right side, while on the left side we find the chip drawer, with a slot for the nano-SIM card and a second hybrid space, for the operator’s chip or micro SD card up to 128GB.

At the top, there is only one noise reduction microphone, and at the bottom, from left to right, we have a headphone jack, microphone, micro USB connector and speaker. On the back, antenna lines on top and bottom. The flash is located to the left of the lens, which is centered. The appliance has a metal back, in one piece with the sides.

The front, with 2.5D glass, has a front flash, invisible light and proximity sensors on this black front, loudspeaker and two self-lenses.

Below, the back left, and recent apps buttons on the right. They have to backlight, but they are erased most of the time. You can adjust to be always on in the on-screen options. The tactile Home button, touch sensitive and also has the biometric reading function, is in the center.

With a 5.5-inch AMOLED screen that uses Full HD resolution, the Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro has 401 ppi of density. There is no official information about the type of protection on the display glass, or even if there is one.

The maximum brightness reaches a reasonable range, being reasonably comfortable for use on the street, in the sunlight. As always, it is recommended to leave the device with the automatic brightness on, so that it adapts the brightness according to the environment.

Selfie Pro’s soft spot is in the night setting. The minimum brightness is too strong for comfortable use in the dark, and it’s a good idea to avoid removing the smartphone for use in dimly lit places, so as not to tire your eyes too much.

Regarding colors, the pattern pulls a bit more to the cool colors of what we see in Samsung’s Super AMOLED, for example, as we have seen in comparison with the J5 Pro, Q6 Plus, and Quantum SKY. But if you do not like this kind of display a lot, you can try applying super color mode, which increases saturation. Or you can customize, tweaking hue and saturation on your own. This smartphone still has a blue light filter.

You can turn on an Always On to show clock and some important notifications such as battery, calls or missed messages on the screen all the time. The update only occurs when the set changes position, but at least you can see the clock without having to turn on the screen.

The Selfie Pro does not have set of stereo speakers, but the mono system is quite reasonable. His problem is the location, easy to be blocked by your hand while playing, for example.

Camera

At the rear, we have a 16MP camera with f / 2.2 aperture and a 3mm focal length. On the front, the main sensor has 12MP, f / 1.8 aperture and 4mm focal length, with a 5MP wide-angle secondary sensor, f / 2.2 aperture and 2mm focal length. You can record 4K videos on the rear sensor and also on the main front.

In the camera app, the pro mode is easy to access through this shortcut here at the bottom of the screen. Sliding to the right (or up, in portrait mode), has a list with more modes – a lot, as usual in the ZenFone line. By sliding to the left (or down, in portrait mode), you find filters.

In the top menu or right side in portrait mode, we have shortcuts for settings, HDR mode, photo format, and a portrait mode, which leaves the main object of the photo focused and blur the background. This feature is done by software, not with the help of the second sensor. It is also available on the rear sensor. And the best photos, of course, are the ones you take in brightly lit environments.

For the front cameras, incidentally, nothing professional, which is a pity for a powerful sensor like this sony IMX362 with 4K recording. It would be great to make videos, but depending on the lighting, it keeps trying to compensate for light, and your video ends up going bad.

Instead of the professional mode, we have an embellishment. The rest works the same, and also has portrait mode. The other difference to the rear sensor is the option of the second, wide-angle lens. And has fewer ways. The operation is the same.

Hardware, Performance and Software

The Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro is powered by Octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor running at 2GHz of clock speed with Adreno 506 GPU to handle its graphics. It runs on 4GB of RAM along with 64GB of internal storage which can be expanded to 128GB using a microSD card.

In our speed test, the Selfie Pro performed the two laps in one minute and 26 seconds, one minute and six on the first lap and twenty seconds on reopening the apps, without having to restart any application.

Already in the benchmark tests, the device had the following scores:

  • AnTuTu  – 65,947 points;
  • GeekBench  – 875 (single-core); 4,347 (multi-core) and 3,171 (GPU);
  • 3D Mark  – 466 points
  • GFX Bench :
    • Manhattan – 6.4 fps (on) / 6.5 fps (offscreen)
    • T-Rex – 22 fps (on) / 23 fps (offscreen)

In games, we used the Gamebench to calculate the average number of frames per second and we obtained the following results:

  • Asphalt 8 – 29 fps, 9% CPU, 82% GPU;
  • Asphalt Xtreme – 30 fps, 9% CPU, 58% GPU;
  • Modern Combat 5 – 28 fps, 11% CPU, 56% GPU;
  • Injustice 2 – 29 fps, 13% CPU 96% GPU;
  • Clash Royale – 59 fps, 5% CPU, 80% GPU;
  • Subway Surfers – 60 fps, 21% CPU, 78% GPU.

In conclusion, the Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro proved to be a reasonably fluid device, without gagging, with a good result even in the heaviest game on our list, Injustice 2, which required a lot of its graphics card. For day-to-day processes, just like basically any intermediary nowadays, it delivers a pretty cool performance.

The smartphone runs on Android 7.0 Nougat operating system out of the box with Zen UI 4.0, and it relies on a 3000mAh battery to power up. It also has a fingerprint sensor embedded in its home button like the other devices in the Zenfone 4 series. Other functionalities include; 4G VoLTE, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS.
