OnePlus is one of the many devices today that can offer a public beta program. The OxygenOS Open Beta program, in fact, allows users of these OnePlus smartphones to get updates with the latest features and security patches before the release of the stable version.
The two smartphone that the company has officialized in 2024 – OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T – are respectively obtaining a new OxygenOS Open Beta 13 (the first) and an Open Beta 11 (the second). The key point of the last update concerns the support for Project Treble, which was not at all obvious. In addition, the new versions offer some other features and optimizations, including an updated and improved user interface.
Support for Project Treble on OnePlus 5 and 5T suggests that both handsets will receive Android updates faster than their predecessors. Google had announced Project Treble before releasing Android 8.0 Oreo last year to allow greater speed in software updates of Android devices. The latest Pixel models, including Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, already included the new development, but OnePlus phones (which also received Android Oreo updates) were currently unavailable.
Project Treble is the tool that allows updating the firmware to the latest version of Android much more quickly and directly, without having to implement important changes. OnePlus had refused to provide Project Treble support on its old smartphones, and this suggested that the company would have done the same with OnePlus 5 and 5T.
In addition to Project Treble, the update brings with it improvements and changes based on the user interface, such as a new design for the OnePlus weather app and a new user interface for the system app. The company has also introduced some changes to the default Launcher app, which now includes improved search tags, “New Installations” category tags in the apps section, and an app list improvement.
