Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 VS Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 – a detailed comparison

Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 VS Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 – a detailed comparison. Qualcomm, the manufacturer of the Snapdragon chipsets, recently released a new SoC (System on Chip) called Qualcomm Snapdragon 710. The new chipset is the first under the new 700 series. It’s said to bridge the gap between the Snapdragon 800 series and the Snapdragon 600 series. According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 710 is for the upper mid-range market and focus on AR and AI technology.

Since the release of the Snapdragon 710 chipset, it has been featured in two smartphones; Xiaomi Mi 8 SE and Vivo NEX A. Prior to the release of the Snapdragon 710 chipset, Qualcomm best performer in the upper mid-range market is the Snapdragon 660 chipset, which us featured on the Nokia 7 Plus, Vivo X21, Xiaomi Mi 6X and so on. But the question is how much of an upgrade is the Snapdragon 710 chipset to the Snapdragon 660 chipset? We’ll have to compare both chipsets to figure that out.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 VS Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 – The CPU

The Snapdragon 710 chipset features the recent Kryo 360 8-core processor, which are separated into higher 2-cores and lower 6-cores. The higher 2-cores reaches a maximum speed of 2.2GHz. Whereas, the lower 6-cores reaches a maximum speed of 1.7GHz. The chipset is built on the 10nm LLP process technology, which is similar to that of the Snapdragon 845 chipset.

Meanwhile, the Snapdragon 660 chipset features the Kryo 260 8-core processor. The Kryo 360 processor is an upgrade to the Kryo 260 processor. Unlike the Kryo 360 processor, the Kryo 260 8-cores processor is separated into higher 4-cores and lower 4-cores. The higher 4-cores reaches a maximum speed of 2.2GHz. Whereas, the lower 4-cores reaches a maximum speed of 1.8GHz. In terms of process technology, the Snapdragon 660 chipset is built on the old 14nm LLP process technology.

In terms of numbers, the Snapdragon 660 clocks better speed than the Snapdragon 710. But in terms of overall performance, the Snapdragon 710 is better thanks to its latest 10nm LLP process technology. Even the chipmaker, Qualcomm said the Snapdragon 710 is 20% faster in performance compared to the Snapdragon 660.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 VS Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 – The GPU

The graphics processing unit is an essential ingredient of any SoC. It’s in charge of anything related to graphics such as gaming, video and photo editing. The Snapdragon 710 packs an Adreno 616 graphics processing unit. Whereas, the Snapdragon 660 features an Adreno 512 graphics processing unit. The Adreno 616 GPU is superior to the Adreno 512 GPU achieving 35% better graphics performance. For game lovers, buying a smartphone that features the Adreno 616 GPU will be ideal.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 VS Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 – Efficiency

The Snapdragon 710 chipset will be the easy winner in terms of efficiency, thanks to its 10nm LLP process technology. The process technology is also used to build the Snapdragon 845 chipset, which powers high-end smartphones. Where the Snapdragon 660 chipset is built on the old 14nm LLP process technology. What this simply means is that in gaming and 4K video playback, the Snapdragon 710 is 40% more efficient. While at video streaming, the Snapdragon 710 chipset is 20% more efficient.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 VS Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 – Artificial Intelligence

According to Qualcomm, the new Snapdragon 710 chipset offers twofold better performance with AI than the Snapdragon 660 chipset. Aside from that, both Snapdragon chipsets feature an artificial intelligence, which is used for bokeh effects, AR acceleration, facial recognition and so much more.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 VS Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 – Connectivity

This category is often overlooked by a lot of people, unlike the CPU and GPU. But it’s still vital to any SoC. Both the Snapdragon 710 and 660 chipset features a maximum upload speed of 150 Mbps. The Snapdragon 710 has the advantage in download speed. The modem of the 710 chipsets is capable of reaching a maximum download speed of 800Mbps. Whereas, the Snapdragon 660 chipset can only reach a maximum download speed of 600Mbps. The Snapdragon 660 features Bluetooth version 4.2. While the Snapdragon 710 features Bluetooth version 5.0.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 VS Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 – Conclusion

The Snapdragon 710 chipset simply outclassed the Snapdragon 660 chipset in almost every category out there. You can even make an argument that the Snapdragon 710 is no longer in the mid-range segment. Let’s just say it’s the younger brother of the Snapdragon 845 chipset. They’re both built on the 10nm LLP process technology. The only disadvantage is that the Snapdragon 710 is slightly expensive than the Snapdragon 660 chipset.
