Today, we will be looking at two different budget smartphones from Xiaomi; the Xiaomi Redmi S2 and Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is also known as Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, which is the Global name.

These two smartphones are priced under the $200 mark and are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset. Despite that, they still have features that distinguish them from each other. Some users might prefer good display over the camera while another may prefer long battery life over selfie camera. It’s in situations like this, that Xiaomi has thrived on. Most of Xiaomi’s budget smartphones have the same front design with minimal bezels. At the back of the Redmi 5 Plus is a straight antenna line at the top and bottom. The same antenna line is also found at the top and bottom of the Redmi S2 but it’s curved towards the edges. The fingerprint sensor of both the Redmi S2 and Redmi 5 Plus is mounted at the back. Above the fingerprint sensor on the Redmi 5 Plus is the LED flash and then a single rear camera. While the Redmi S2 features a dual rear camera at the top left corner with the LED flash.

The Redmi 5 Plus features a front glass, aluminum back, and frame with plastic ends. While on the Redmi S2 is a front glass with an aluminum unibody. The Redmi 5 Plus measures 8.1mm thick and weighs 180 grams. While the Redmi S2 measures 8.1mm thick and weighs 170 grams. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is available in four body colors option; Black, Gold, Blue and Rose Gold. While the Redmi S2 is available in three body colors option; Rose Gold, Champagne Gold, and Platinum Silver.

The Redmi S2 features a 5.99 inch IPS LCD touchscreen, which is the same for the Redmi 5 Plus. On the Redmi S2, the screen stretches up to 74.5% screen-to-body ratio. While on the Redmi 5 Plus, the screen stretches up to 77.4% screen-to-body ratio. The Redmi 5 Plus features an 18:9 aspect ratio display, 1080 x 2160 pixels resolution and 403 pixels per inch density. While the Redmi S2 features a smaller pixels resolution of 720 x 1440, an 18:9 aspect ratio display and 269 pixels per inch density.

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 is more of a camera-focused smartphone. The Redmi 5 Plus features a 12MP rear camera sensor and a 5MP front-facing camera sensor. The front and back camera sensor of the Redmi 5 Plus is what you get at the back of the Redmi S2. The dual rear camera of the Redmi S2 consists of a primary 12MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture and a secondary 5MP sensor. On the front of the Redmi S2 is a 16MP sensor. The camera of the Redmi S2 features AI portrait mode and AI-based beautification features.

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 and Redmi 5 Plus are powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset coupled with Adreno 506 graphics processing unit. The Snapdragon 625 chipset carries 8-cores processor reaching a maximum speed of 2.0GHz. The Redmi 5 Plus comes with an out-dated Android 7.1.2 Nougat with MiUI 9.0 skin on top. Though Xiaomi promised an Oreo update for its users. The Xiaomi Redmi S2 comes with the latest Android 8.1 Oreo and MiUI 9.5 skin. Both smartphones have the same memory variants of 3GB with 32 internal storage and 4GB with 64GB internal storage.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus pegs in a non-removable Li-Po 4000 mAh battery, which should last more than a day of normal usage. While the Xiaomi Redmi S2 pegs in a smaller non-removable Li-Po 3080 mAh battery. They both support the same 5V/2A fast battery charging.
