Remember the Freetel Ice 2 that was launched in August 2017? Don’t remember? You can do a quick search or perusal of the full specifications, review, price and pictures of the device.
The Freetel Ice 2 was embraced by a handful of Nigerians, and likewise got positive reviews mostly for how the device was able to pack top-level features like the Android v7.0 Nougat, 1 GB of RAM, 8GB built-in memory, and a 720p display for only a token of N13,000 (less than $40). The device didn’t do well in some other aspects like camera and battery, but being an entry-level device, it can be neglected to a large extent.
Coming as a new entry into the Japanese company’s (Freetel) line of smartphone is the Freetel Ice 2 Plus. The device, down from its name, to the specifications and features, reflects an upgrade of the preceding Freetel Ice 2 smartphone. Releasing an upgrade to an already existing device in less than 2 months after its release show how serious and determined Freetel is on penetrating the Nigerian smartphone scene. Without further ado, let’s dive right into the accompanying features of the Freetel Ice Plus 2.
DESIGN AND DISPLAY
Still coming wrapped in a plastic body, the Freetel Ice 2 Plus however comes with a much bigger body and more attractive aesthetic. The back cover of the device is detachable for access to the SIM and Micro SD card ports. The Micro USB port for charging and file transfer are situated at the top of the device. With a 155 x 79 x 9 mm dimension, I must say the Freetel Ice 2 Plus is quite bulky, also, it the bezels – they are wide.
The device however comes with an impressive display. The Freetel Ice 2 Plus comes with a 5.5 inch display with the same 720 x 1280 pixels as the Freetel Ice 2. Adding to the beauty of the device is the 2.5D curved glass that covers the display. Holding the device and operating on the device’s display, likewise holding the device gives it a premium feel.
However, despite the goodness of the display, the Freetel Ice 2 Plus lacks something quite important – the Corning Gorilla Glass screen protection (or any protection of any kind). Purchasing an external Glass protector to prevent the smartphone screen from breaking or shattering easily is recommended.

PROCESSING, OS AND STORAGE
In the above three compartments, the Freetel Ice 2 Plus is an exact clone (or should I say ‘twin’) of its predecessor, the Freetel Ice 2.
The Freetek Ice 2 Plus also comes with a MediaTek MT6580 chipset (which is used in most low-end and budget smartphones by the way), a 1.2 GHz Quad-core processor, rocks 1 GB of RAM for application multitasking and a built-in memory of 8 GB to keep documents and multimedia. The device also runs on the Android v7.0 Nougat operating system and I don’t think users should expect an Android v8.0 Oreo – well, of course Freetel says otherwise in the future.
The built-in memory can be expanded to up to 32 GB using an external storage card.

CAMERA AND BATTERY
The camera sensors (both primary and secondary) were greatly worked on as there was an increase in their quality compared to the preceding Ice 2.
The main camera on the rear has been beefed up to 5 megapixels from 2 MP, while the secondary sensor embedded at the front is a 2 megapixels lens. The rear comes with a permanent escort of a LED flash light while the front camera doesn’t.
The battery capacity of the Freetel Ice 2 Plus have also been massively beefed up; as a matter of fact – doubled! The device comes with a non-removable and non-replaceable 2,800 mAh Lithium Ion battery. The device however lacks the Quick charge technology, therefore, the battery may take a while to get fully charged. Asides that, for an entry-level device such as the Freetel Ice 2 Plus, the battery is fine!
