Both phones are well built, and they will offer a smooth performance. However, the Huawei P20 Pro is leading in most categories which makes it a better phone over the iPhone XR.
If you are looking for a smartphone to deliver a smooth performance, then the Huawei P20 Pro will make a better companion, but if you have not used Apple products before and your budget is under $700, the iPhone XR is the best bet. In all, the decision will base on between iOS and Android.
