How to Get iPhone XS Depth Effect Control On iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 7 Plus

The new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max all come with a tonne of new features. One of the new features on the new iOS devices allows you to change the intensity of the bokeh of photos taken on your device. With this feature, you can change the background blur after you have taken the photo.

The new iOS devices come with a new depth sensor which allows them to blur different parts of the background using a rate you want. This effect is quite similar to what you get on a DSLR. However, it is different from what phones like Pixel 2 do.

Since this feature needs depth data to work, iPhones which have a single rear camera like the iPhone 6, iPhone 7, or the iPhone 8 will not be able to utilize the feature.

How to Edit Background Blur in Photos on iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 7 Plus

2 1The app which is used to make this feature work is known as Focos. Portrait mode has an issue when it comes to dealing with ears, glasses and smooth edges. With Focos, you can not only edit the intensity of the blur effect but also choose to focus on a subject which it farther. Focos will adjust the depth effect of the subject accordingly. Best of all, you get all these basic functions for free.

To use this feature, you need to first of all install the app. Next launch it and you should see the Camera view at the top of the screen. Below, there is a grid of your Portrait Mode images. Open an image you wish to edit by tapping on it.

A slider will appear below the image. Drag the slider to the left to reduce the blur intensity and the other way to increase it. That’s all! You have changed the background blur of your photo! Focos uses depth data from the photo itself so even if you increase the blur all the way, it won’t blur the edges very much.

With Focos, you can also change the aperture size from f/20 to f/1.4 (iPhone XS, on the other hand, has a range of f/16 to f/1.4). You can also select the shape you want for the blur effect by tapping on the Shape option. Focos also has a tool you can use to edit lighting in 3D space.

All these features can be gotten for free on the bokeh app. However, if you wish to access more features such as specialized lenses and highlights, you can subscribe to the $0.99/month plan.
