Vivo NEX A VS Xiaomi Mi 8 SE – Snapdragon 710 powered mid-rangers. Chinese phone makers are upping their game when it comes to innovation. It’s now a new trend for most Chinese OEM companies to manufacture a mid-range variant of their flagship. Xiaomi did that with their latest flagship (the Xiaomi Mi 8), which was released with the mid-range variant; the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE. The Mi 8 SE became the first smartphone to be powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset.

Vivo recently follows suit with the released of the Vivo NEX S. The all-display smartphone was launched with its mid-range variant called the Vivo NEX A. And just like the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE, the Vivo NEX A is also powered by Snapdragon 710 chipset. So let’s see which of these two phone makers got it right with the mid-range variant of their flagship.

It’ll be hard for any smartphone to beat the design of the Vivo NEX A and its flagship variant. The Xiaomi Mi 8 SE features top-notch houses the selfie camera along with other sensors. While there’s no top-notch or top bezel on the Vivo NEX A. All you get is a full-screen on the NEX A with the selfie camera popping from the top when you enter the camera app. This concept of the Vivo NEX A allows it to feature a screen-to-body of almost 90%.

The Mi 8 SE measures 147.3 x 73.1 x 7.5 mm in dimensions while the NEX A measures 162 x 77 x 8 mm. Regarding weight, the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE is lighter with 164 grams. While the Vivo NEX A weighs 199 grams. At the back of both phones is a rear mounted fingerprint sensor and dual rear camera. The dual rear camera is arranged in a vertical direction at the top left corner. Regarding body colors, the Mi 8 SE is available in Gray, Blue, Red and Gold colors. Whereas, the Vivo NEX A comes in just Black and Red colors.

Both the Vivo NEX A and Xiaomi Mi 8 SE features Super AMOLED panel. This screen technology was exclusive to flagship, but it’s good they’re now being adopted for mid-rangers. The Super AMOLED panel on the Mi 8 SE measures 5.88 inches while on the NEX A it measures 6.59 inch. The display of the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE houses a 1080 x 2244 pixels resolution with 423 PPI density. Whereas, the display of the Vivo NEX A houses a 1080 x 2316 pixels resolution with 388 PPI density.

The camera of both smartphones is based on AI technology. The dual rear camera of both the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE and the Vivo NEX A features a 12MP primary sensor and a 5MP secondary sensor. On the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE, the primary sensor features f/1.9 aperture, dual-pixel PDAF, and gyro-EIS while the secondary sensor features f/2.0 aperture. Meanwhile, the primary sensor of the NEX A features f/1.8 aperture, dual-pixel PDAF, and 4-axis OIS while the 5MP features f/2.4 aperture.

For selfies, the Mi 8 is equipped with a 20MP shooter and f/2.0 aperture. While the Vivo NEX A comes with an 8MP pop-up shooter and f/2.0 aperture.

The hardware of both the Vivo NEX A and Xiaomi Mi 8 SE is the same which brought about the comparison. They’re both powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chip with Octa-core processor and Adreno 616 graphics processing unit.

Running on both phones is Android 8.1 Oreo with Funtouch OS 4.0 skin laid on the Vivo NEX A. While the Mi 8 SE features MIUI 9.5 skin. Regarding memory options, the Vivo NEX A is only available in a 6GB memory with 128GB storage. While the Mi 8 SE comes in two memory options; 4GB and 6GB with 64GB storage.

The Vivo NEX A packs a non-removable Li-lon 4000 mAh battery with 22W fast battery charging. Whereas, the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE houses a non-removable Li-Po 3120 mAh battery with fast battery charging.

The Vivo NEX A cost around $702 (N245,700) while the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE cost around $351 (N122,850). The Xiaomi Mi 8 SE offers you a far better quality-price ratio. The Vivo NEX A has a bigger battery and internal storage. While they have a similar camera, hardware, and display specs. So how is the Vivo NEX A twice the price of the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE?
