How to install a custom rom on an Android phone

With this tutorial, you will learn how to install a custom ROM on an Android phone. Installing a custom ROM on an Android device, whether it’s a smartphone or a tablet is a fairly simple process.

In its simplicity, however, there are some fundamental requirements to be met for its success. But why did you decide to install a custom ROM on your smartphone, maybe you don’t like the official firmware?

The reasons for installing a custom ROM on your phone or tablet can be many. The first and most important could be because your smartphone has not received an official update from the manufacturer for some time.

The sad reality is that most of the producers and telephone operators quickly forget the old devices and thus also cease to update them. Let us know before buying a new device.

Take, for example, the Samsung Galaxy S III. When it was released in 2012 it became an incredibly popular (and powerful) phone. But Android 4.3 Jelly Bean was the last update seen on this beautiful phone.

So if we have a mobile phone that the manufacturer doesn’t update anymore, installing a new custom ROM on the phone is a great way to get it back fresh and snappy.

Again because you are annoyed to see the same firmware always on the job or simply because you want to update your phone or tablet. The reasons can be many, so we decided to write a tutorial on how to install a custom ROM on an Android phone.

At the beginning of the article we talked about the requirements to be met, then we start by seeing what they are. The first and most important is to back up your phone, just in case you have important data to save or else do nothing.

If you want to backup your Android phone, on this page you will find the guide on how to do it, if instead, you have installed a custom recovery here you will learn how to make a Nandroid Backup using the customized TWRP recovery.

The second very important thing to do is to install the drivers. The drivers will allow your PC to recognize your smartphone. On this page, you will find useful drivers for most Android devices. With some smartphones, just install the tool and install the drivers automatically.

Two other very important operations are receiving root permissions and installing a customized TWRP recovery. Not knowing your devices, below I put the links to the sections, then it remains for you to find your phone.

Other requirements are no less important, having the phone battery at least 80% charged. If the phone ever turns off during the installation of a custom ROM, at 90% the phone will lock on a continuous restart/bootloop and use when an original USB cable is possible.

What is an Android custom ROM?

On our blog we have hundreds of customized ROMs, if you plan to install one, just write the name of the phone in the search box and then scroll down to find your favorite ROM.

But how to install a custom ROM on an Android phone?

Now let’s go to the guide:

  • First, download and transfer the ROM and Gapps to the internal/external memory of the device, then restart the device via TWRP recovery. (Each phone has its own method)
  • Once in the recovery menu, do a “Swipe on Factory Reset” at the bottom of the screen, go back to the TWRP recovery in the main menu, tap on “Install” and select the .zip ROM you transferred to the device first in Step 1.
  • After selecting the .zip file, do a “Swipe to confirm the installation” at the bottom of the screen to start the installation process of the custom ROM. This may take some time.
  • Once the ROM has been successfully installed, swipe “Wipe cache/dalvik”, select and then “Swipe to clean” at the bottom of the screen, now to install the Gapps you have to redo the method you used to install the custom ROM.
  • After installing both the ROM and the Gapps, reboot the device.
